Please don't ignore the huge set of players out there that play because they enjoy the storyline missions. There was no mention at all of any kind of story in the 1-year plan, and that's a real shame. We've never been this long witout any sort of storyline content planned or in progress.

The game is becoming more and more user friendly and going places people would never have even began to dream of. Which is great because some of these features are really good and they've been needed for a long time. But regardless, its always been FFXI's backstory and quests that made it stand out from all of the other games out there.

For me, I'm really excited about all the changes and content up and coming, and I really want to experience it all. But unless there's some sort of story I can go away and do every now and then, instead of griding against monster, I just find it hard to motivate myself.

At the end of the day, what I really want to know, is it worth investing my time into my character, and paying the monthly sub or is that it for the story of Vana'diel?

The update on Voidwatchers stats something like "Killing them will slowly reveal the secret of the origins" implying some sort of Story.

Second, Abyssea has a Story, it was there, And it was pretty good for a "Alternate Universe" Story.
You should try Working on "Atma of the Savior" If you're into Story. It requires you to do everything Abyssea has to offer, Including the Quests. Those Quests have some interesting stories (Some of them)

Before that, WoTG had a great storyline for a whole "Time travel" Setting, and the 3-City Quests were great too.

This game still has a lot of good deep story, Its just people tend to not notice it. I'm sure SE will continue to add storyline. In one of the Threads the DEV mentioned using Magian Trials for "Non-Story Driven content", So they at least have plans of Story-driven content.
