The ffxiencyclopedia page says that exp increases as you kill the same type of fiend. Based on ~7 kills, this didn't see to be happening. Also, my lv77 blm with trust npcs gets ~150 exp from a very tough target in abyssea, but ~2000 exp outside of abyssea. What is this about?

Abyssea has an entirely different exp system than the outside world and it takes a lot more than a mere 7 mobs to actually see a difference. (closer to 50 and more)
Apart from that, exp per kill gained inside Abyssea also depends on the strength of certain "lights", see: http://ffxiclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Visitant_Lights
That said, Abyssea these days is far from the most efficient way to gain experience points, due to the different exp calculations, exp per kill inside Abyssea caps at slightly over 600 per kill when conditions are met, regardless of mob level.
The RoV bonuses also do not apply in there by the way, you're much better off leveling in the outside world.

Exp in Abyssea climbs to 300 exp/kill if you kill the same mobs repeatedly, this is further increased to ~600exp/kill with golden light.

It helps when you have 6-18 players on multiple targets of the same mob type, which is why Abyssea XP parties have the ability to generate some serious XP / hour. If you're soloing, like others have said there are better ways to earn XP

Escha zones from Rhapsodies are the place to level now, as monsters inside, with all the EXP multipliers that work only outside of Abyssea, bring kills up to much more than 600 per kill. Abyssea was outdated once Adoulin released, and even moreso when Rhapsodies released. Global EXP outside Abyssea was doubled in 2013. Then you get EXP bonuses from Trusts, rings, furniture, Rhapsodies Key Items, and Records of Eminence, which mostnly don't work in Abyssea.
200 EXP for a base mob your level. Rhapsodies KIs almost triple that, plus double EXP from a ring, plus double EXP campaigns, plus boosts from Qultada and Kupofried, plus 10% from the clock, plus a few percent from a gift, and you are looking at well over 1100 EXP per monster killed, almost double what Abyssea tops out at after you spend half an hour building lights and chain.

Abyssea needs an overhaul to bring it in line with FFXI's end game design; I think with some original thinking it can be a great place to level grind not only experience but also another spot for chaining capacity points... come on SE use the abyssea assets for more than just empty zones... it served its purpose at the time but now, give it a face lift.
I enjoyed abyssea content and hope that there's some plan to reinvigorate it.

Yeah, Abyssea needs to be brought to the Vana year 2251 already.
