Alright so I'm posting this for a friend while he's trying to figure out issues. Since getting the game, he's had issues where it crashes rather frequently. Lately, it's been particularly severe. Every time he clicks enter on the opening cinematic when the game starts up, PlayOnline crashes and boom, he's kicked out of the game. We've done a file check, repaired files, tried again, same issue. File check revealed no further issues. Tried a full uninstall and reinstall, nada. So we're hitting a bit of a wall here, and are not sure how to proceed.

I know he plays on Windows 10, but I'm not sure what else to check for to get it running. We made sure DirectPlay is enabled, as I remember reading in another thread that it was important for this, and at this point, we're not really sure what to do. Does anyone have any advice, or has solved a similar issue?

I had a similar issue. Here's my situation:

My TV is a cheap off-brand and overscans; i.e. it only displays a resolution of 1826x1024 instead of 1920x1080. I always used Nvidia Control Panel to set that resolution and left Windows on the 1920x1080 in display settings. Upon upgrading to Windows 10, the game would crash every at launch every time. I found that Windows had set the display resolution to 1826x1024 in display settings on its own. I changed that back to 1920x1080 and used the resize desktop option in Nvidia Control Panel to fit it to the screen. I'm not sure why, but after making those changes, FFXI launches fine.

That was my solution, and I hope it helps.

Unfortunately it did not, but thank you for the input. We've tried everything from making sure his antivirus allowed it to disabling the opening cinematic as per various suggestions, but we've been hitting a wall. Still crashing on startup, right after where the cinematic movie would be. :(

I know this shouldn't have to be asked, but:

He isn't using any third-party programs, is he?

Eh, it's a safe question to ask in this day and age, but no, he's playing 100% vanilla and getting those issues. If it was something like a 3P issue then it'd be a whole different kettle of fish.
