I had planned on trying for Reaving Wind tonight, but was advised against doing so alone. I'd like to know if any of those Amphipteres are soloable and, if so, how one would go about it. Finally learning Mind Blast was a PITA even at 86, so I'd like to save myself as much trouble as possible.

Yes, the ones in the past are soloable. Not pleasant to solo, but soloable! Eat tacos, Cocoon/Cimicine Discharge/etc etc - the works. Keep MP high, take it slow but steady, bring Echo Drops.
Much easier if you bring a friend with you.

You can also learn this from Amhuluk in Abyssea - Misareaux if you have the opportunity to fight this as BLU. Just before it died I equipped all my blue magic+ gear and AF gloves. Took 2-3 fights to learn.

Hmm, that's also a good idea I never considered. It's certainly easier than Turul...

I ended up soloing one in Beau[S]. It was painful and I wasn't very much prepared for it honestly. I found trying to keep it enfeebed and ride on shadows started to eat too much of my MP, and I wasn't going to survive. This was with battery charge + AF2 body + fresh trait too. I got it to around 60% before I realized I wasn't going to make this. I had sheep song equipped, so I used it, ran away a fair distance away to maximize the number of ticks of MP I obtained between each time he reached me. Each time he reached me I'd melee it and head butt spam it, until I had ~2 shadows left, and both Utsusemi's were on recast. At this point I slept it, used MP drainkiss, and ran away again. I did this until it used reaving wind one of these times. By that time I was high enough on MP to where I could finish it off without having to run away again.
They pretty much have a lot of HP... unless you have a decent eva set straight up 1v1ing them might make you run out of MP before you can finish one 1v1, but at 90 they were pretty easily to sleep and to bind with regurg. I got lucky and went 1/1 on reaving wind.
I'd pretty much say it would be best not to go solo. Not so much on it not being soloable, but more on it taking so long to find one in the air, and taking so long to solo it by sleeping it over and over. If you have a second even, you'll find one easier and take it down without much trouble.

I went 1/8 on Amhuluk :( Even with AF gloves.
