So in PSO they have a system where your friends can record their data and you can summon an NPC of them to fight with you.
I was thinking something similar could be cool for ffxi's trust system.
Make it so you do a quest to get a special trust cipher key item, once you have it you get the spell Trust: ???.
After you have the spell you can make a party with a friend and go to the Trust initiation NPC and they will have an option to commune with your party member.
When you commune, your party member's current appearance, equipment, job, subjob, available spells, abilities and weaponskills will all be saved on to the trust: ??? Spell and you can then summon them as a trust NPC.

Like I said everything would be as they are when you commune with the player. It would be like taking a snapshot of them and taking it as a trust npc, so if they are a nin/war when you commune, when you summon them they'd be a nin/war. If you wanna change it you have to commune with them or someone else again and it will overwrite the current one.

As cool as this would be you need to understand just how much work this would be to implement. In order for this to not be a complete waste of time they would need to write intelligent AI scripts for all 462 job/subjob combinations (yeah I know some could be reused but even so...).
I.E. if your friend shows up as DRK/THF, you are going to expect that his trust will know how to SA and/or TA their WS, stun intelligently, use soul eater/last resort/blood weapon/soul enslavement intelligently (not pulling hate or dying and using at appropriate times), possibly use drain/aspir/absorb spells intelligently. Not only would this one example be more comprehensive then any trust they have introduced so far but if that same friend shows up as DRK/WAR instead, now it needs to know how/when to use berserk/aggressor/warcry (timing and in combination with which DRK abilities). Now if he changes to DRG/WAR that's a whole different situation again (would need to use /WAR abilities in conjunction with different DRG abilities). And this is not even considering mage AIs that would have to know how/when to use literally hundreds of spells and then each of them in conjunction with /SCH strategems/elemental seal/divine caress/etc.
I hope you can see that this would represent a huge amount of effort on their part, and they have already implied (if not outright stated) that they want to put as little effort into this game as possible at this point.
Sorry to burst your bubble, I too think it would make a very cool addition to the game, but it just does not seem practical/likely at this point. =(
