This is on a used PS2 I bought since my old PS2 died. I can still use FFXI on my PC so it isnt like I can't play, but it is a nice option to have for another FFXI player when friends who play FFXI come over.
Anyway, when it got to the DNAS authentication it kept coming up with the error "Error Code POL-1557 (DNAS Error -881)." I did try finding the solution myself and the only thing I found was try formatting the drive in case it was still configured for my old PS2. I did, but it didnt make a difference. The same error codes and same spot.
Anyone have any ideas?

Something connected to that PS2 is causing the DNAS hardware and software check to fail. Sony has the error code definitions.

Do you know if that PS2 has a mod-chip in it? Seems to me I remember something about some chips causing DNAS errors and you have to disable it somehow (chip specific methods to get around it).

Leviticus,

Bungiefan is correct. DNAS is a system of authentication for the PlayStation2 console, managed by Sony. Any errors you receive with DNAS authentication will need to be addressed with Sony. When contacting them, simply state that you are receiving a “DNAS Error” and provide the 881 code.

I posted it here because the sony site was down at the time and I was hoping someone else has had this issue and knew what to do. I will try contacting sony. I hope I didn't end up with a modded PS2 like Raist said. I thought GameStop checked for stuff like that.
Anyway, thank you for the response.

Apparently SONY no longer support DNAS on Playstation 2 consoles (for a lot of their games) FFXI being one of the few exeptions on the list. I think your best shot is try to contact them through the Playstation 3 support.

But considering the error 881 being listed as "PS2 hardware incompatible" it could mean you're having problem with the Hard Drive or the PS2 console itself. FFXI is only supported on "NTSC/UC" consoles designed for USA and Canada (DVD player Region 1) and if you get Playonline to boot through the disc (For example Mexican consoles bear the "NTSC-U/C" mark but have DVD Player set for Region 4 with NTSC specs) and the console is NOT an US/Canada console, you will be unable to play.

Also some official PS2 Hard Drives which do not support DNAS properly (actually these were intended to be used on DTL/DEVKIT hardware) as they're prototype/test drives.

These have found their way to EBAY recently. I have purchased a few myself and I am aware that some of them cannot be used with the PlayOnline software even thought SONY's HDD Utility disc works fine with them.
