Been discussed before I think? but is there any chance of this being added? even if it's just $10 or $15 for a GM to do it manually?

It is afterall just a change of a digit in the database.

name change can be done with a server jump, add mule and server jump back. 3 days

Sound good and I'm sure many people want to be a Taru at some point. =)

1) It's not just a "change of a digit in the database." It's also the web scripts and systems that make the change that need to be created, setting up the payment process, and as we know from many other things we've begged for in FFXI, nothing is ever as simple as we think it is.
(And let me tell you something: I work in QA for a game studio, and I can guarantee you that virtually everything people beg for in a game's forum and say "oh, it would be so simple to do!" actually isn't. We ourselves have talked directly to the studio's developers who said "We really can't do this becuase it would be too much work or because other reasons.")
2) There was some hope that this would happen prior to the recent announcements about FFXI's future, but following that, I think that pretty much killed any chance of it happening.
3)The only real possibility is that there will be a paid feature in the mobile FFXI because Nexon, but that's completely seperate from the PC version.

Given the current state of the game it's far less likely than in the past that it could be abused, so I'm not against it. I just don't think it will ever happen at this point in FFXI's lifetime. They've already shot down quite a few "simple" adjustments for various reasons.

Well they aren't closing the game down and this will be a paid service.

Also the phone app thing, who is really going to play that? Not me!

Totally would not play the phone app thing and most friends of mine on FFXI said they would not either. I am sure it will be popular in Japan but other places not so much.

If you want to change race best option would be to reroll with a new character at this point. With the new exp changes its quite easy to do so now and be at lvl99 in a few days. Not only that but if your new character is on the same server as the old one I believe you can mail rare ex items to characters on the same account so you could salvage all your gear from your old character.

It just so odd that Square don't monetize this game at all really, there are so many ways to make extra income and they just don't bother at all.

I hasten to add, things that players want.

I know it would be a paid service. But they've considered it in the past and never acted on it. The only logical reason they could have is a cost/benefit analysis coming up unfaforable to them.

Also there's people who only care what they are seeing, and they would just use third party tools to change settings locally instead of paying for a race change e.g. why pay for something you can get for free.

The reasons I won't play the mobile FFXI are:
1) I don't have a smartphone
2) Even if I did, my interest is low because it's isolated from the PC game. I don't really want to start anew.

Being serviced by nexon is not among my reasons for me not to play, but it seems to be the most common reason cited for most people (which, as I've expressed before, I feel is unfair.)

The mobile game will be terrible, there is no way you can fit a 20-30 gig game on a mobile. It will just be some twee online rpg like all the rest, nothing like ffxi in anything but name.

Nexon running it is also incredibly bad.

The game doesn't have to be the same size because they don't have to use the same resources. FFXI is mainly so large because of the music files and the graphics models. Newer, more efficient formats exist now.

I've always been a fan of having the option to change race, whether SE did for free via an npc, or charged via account management.

Actually, this is entirely false as they have said it is essentially ffxi tailored for phones and has much of its content (and will eventually cover all the expansions. Downloading a huge game is nothing as long as you do it at home or somewhere there's wifi. Grandmasters is the game that's nothing like XI just using its characters. But since we can't even have that, it doesn't matter.

Nexon running it is not incredibly bad. I mean, they could have chosen better, but it's still SE's IP and they can tell Nexon what they can and can't do with it. Nexon gets a bad rap because most of the games it services are severely pay to win (Maplestory being the biggest offender but has been apparently dialing it back over the last year), but some of the games are actually good in spite of that. I suppose if you have problems things could get ugly because their customer service is crap, but then again so many people here complain about SE's customer service. Of course, we really don't have a lot of info right now, which is the real problem.
