I am a returning player and I was wondering if there are any populated servers at prime time US their is less then 600 players is it like that with all servers I am on Phoenix and this server should be buried underground. What is the population on your servers?

I believe the biggest servers right now are Bahamut and Asura.

Asura seems to be ti for the English-speaking community, in large part to the REDDIT site and linkshell pointing people there, and the low cost of server transfers at times like this. FFXI has lost a lot of players to attrition from FFXIV ARR, other MMOs, real life as people grow up and get more time obligations the dropping of German and French language support,, and the announcement of the end of development last month (no new content after November's patch), as well as various bans recently (more salvage exploits and finally cracking down on speed and position hacking). They don't want to do server merges until Rhapsodies is released, in case it causes a bunch of people to return.
Bahamut appears to be the Japanese equivalent to Asura. Ragnarok was decent if you could play in East Coast USA primetime, but I'm in Alaska and that just wasn't working for me to get stuff done. Asura is the only server I've seen 1000 or more people on, and the REDDIT LS hangs out at the max of 64 people online during much of the day. Ragnarok was usually about 700-800.

As someone who was on bahamut and moved to asura.... Asura has tons of people. You should move to asura

Asura has tons of people at 99. If you do a /sea all 1-98 though, the number is usually between 100-200, even when there are 900-1000 people on.

I wouldn't really expect that issue to be any better on any other server -- heck, it's probably worse. Aside from the handful of us returning/new players that trickle in, I'd wager that the large majority of players have about every job they want at 99 already, and have probably had them there for awhile even. Just the nature of the beast in this genre.

I can vouch that Asura is very active. We are home to the official Reddit linkshell with over 400 active players. Find more information here: http://www.reddit.com/r/RedditLinkshell

Maybe they will server merge again sometime?

Once they stop making content I think a huge chunk of players are going to have to stop paying the sub, as much as you love something you can't let a company basically rip you off. Paying a sub for nothing is awful, they will be making like 99% profit which is disgraceful.

They said in the Freshly Picked after the Rhapsodies announcement that they aren't doing server merges until after Rhapsodies finishes releeasing, in case the servers get a big boost in population from returning players sending it off into the sunset.
I came back for the free week. Only saw 406 people online and 200 of those were afk in jeuno bazzaring stuff. I finished the new storyline in a couple hours. Wanted to try the new endgame event they just added but nobody really wanted to do it. Wanted to try the event that was added last patch Vagary to upgrade empyrean armor nobody was doing it or wanted to do it. Last free week I got a full set of 119 AF1 for my paladin and I had to do a bunch of boring merit grinding and soloing Ark Angel fights, which leads me to believe you pretty much have to solo anything if you want to get stuff done only problem is that Vagary content for the Empyrean stuff takes 3 people minimum and I can't even find 1 person that wants to do it.
Yea the servers seem pretty dead. The way it is now this probably would not get me to resub because there is just nobody to play with in a multiplier game. Which leads me to another bad thing I saw almost every player that wasn't afk was dual boxing another character that was on auto follow. When did this become the norm? Its pretty bad when your remaining playerbase plays a 2nd character because they don't have anyone else to play with.
They really do need a server merge because there is like nobody to do stuff with. Maybe if they cut down the number of servers to like 2 or 4 and there was like 3000-4000 people on like in the old days and you could actually find people to do the content in the game with then yes I would play again.
I been playing FFXIV because the game is really active and I find it a lot more fun then 11. I have a free company in FF14 with about 60 people who use to play FFXI, but not any of them are interested in the free week. FFXIV is just so much more modern that going back and playing FFXI I find a lot problems in 11 that just don't exist in 14 for example the NMs you have to fight for the new story missions only one person can fight them at a time and you were fighting like 5-10 other people to pop your NM, while in FFXIV the game just spawns a NM for each person that touches the spot so basically giving you your own personal fight right then and there with no waiting. Other minor annoyences like when buying stuff from a npc you can't see your inventory so you don't know how many you should buy.

Today is a bad day to be trying to do those events. It's a weekday, so the majority fo people are working, and the patching process is still so slow that a lot of people can't log in yet. Try to do Vagary and the new Zi'Tah on the weekend, once the wikis have been filled out a bit, people have been able to patch, and the majority of players have a day off from work.
Also, Phoenix may not be a very populated server for English-speaking players anymore. You may want to investigate if it has become a JP-dominated server. Asura seems pretty EN-dominated, because Reddit has drawn a bunch of people to buying world transfers, and that LS is often at the 64-player limit for having pearls equipped.

no one server seems remarkably better than another at this point. If you think switching servers is likely to improve your experience, I'd say that's unlikely.

I took a break about 6 months or so after SoA came out, mostly because NA/EU were still doing aby crap and the only people doing SoA were JP, which you know how that goes if you don't speak it >_> So I took a break, came back around November last year until February this year, seems out of no where, everyone went and got everything done, so while I'm trying to get into delve and skirmish, either no one is interested in it anymore or, and this is an actual quote from a number of people, require you to have 119 gear...to get 119 -.- Which I could hit stuff perfectly fine in delve at 114, but still get turned down because I don't have the gear from the content I'm trying to do.
Came back earlier this week for the free week and what do I see? The same thing that happened on release of SoA. NA/EU just afking in Jeuno/Adoulin, wikis are void of info on anything new, while whole pts of JP are grinding down the new nms in Escha. I've seen quite a few people already with multiple pieces from the nms. Unity nms don't even seem to be a thing anymore, not that they helped my jobs anyways seeing as how it seemed to only drop whm, war and pld stuff. Tried to get into Vagary so I could get the wins to reforge my empy to 119, not a single person interested in doing it.
That's the thing that's putting me off to subscribing again, no one seems to be doing anything anymore or have crazy "requirements" to let you join them the rare times someone actually does something. It's sad to see XI come to this :/
Also, semi off topic but didn't feel like making a whole new one just for a single question.
What's with everyone and their galka using Qaaxo harness? Even with it fully augmented, my manibozho jerkin is a lot better o.o Way more acc and atk, maybe like 1-2? less str. Considering to consistently hit the mosquitos in Escha or some of the higher lvl nms you need a truckload of acc. I can only manage about 850, no idea how people are hitting consistently, when I examine them and they have almost no acc gear on. Is there something magical about 119 gear that gives you more acc and doesn't show it, even in /checkparam? I've tried it out with the 3-4 119 pieces I have (mostly reforged/qaaxo harness) and I ended up with about ~750 acc

The numbers aren't the issue honestly, there are enough people online to do whatever you wanted if the motivation was there but it's not.
Everyone seems to of lost their motivation to do anything but lack the ability to leave.
Feels like an old peoples home at this point.

I can say from experience that this isn't true. Asura server is pretty busy. Probably the reddit effect, but I made the swap from Odin to Asura and it's the best decision I could have made.

The crazy requirements are mainly for pickup groups. If you can find an LS, they will be more accepting of lower requirements. With a pickup, the skill of the random players you don't know is in question, so everyone wants the optimal job set the community has discovered, to reduce the need for players to react, plan, think, and have skill. The optimal builds complete the content with the least risk, and the most room for mistakes. LSes have most of the members knowing most of the others, so they have better communication, and they know the approximate skill of their colleagues. It's a matter of finding a social group like that.

This is a big issue. A lot of people have quit because of lack of motivation. The game gets boring, and everyone tired of grinding jp, merits etc. New content comes out that is disappointing for many, so they try it for a few days then get sick of it. I have heard many complaints about the new area/content that came out last update, and I was in there for a few days but find the lack of decent mobs/getting silt to do any NM non motivating. Fighting others to get mobs when there is way more too weak mobs then mobs we could really use is a pain. The place needs better high level mobs (or more of them). I know of a lot of people who have quit/taking long breaks because of lack of motivation to do anything on game. People sign on, watch shouts for a few, then afk or log off. It is hard to get people to do anything anymore even when you shout for cp parties or whatever sometimes it is hard to fill the spots, and it is not just cause of population. I am on Asura that has a lot of people still (1.2k on atm at 8:30 pm PDT Saturday).
