Ok thx for the help I got from my thread on installing ffxi on laptop, after a lot of messing around I managed to get it installed. Now something new I need help/advice with is how do I use a game controller for ffxi?i see many different people say Xbox better or PS3 is better ect,but all say they had issues getting to work properly.i will say I'm completely new to using laptop so im not technical at all,I own PS3 and Xbox 360 controller but not sure how I go about setting it up,also are there any other controllers out there that would just work straight away without having to install stuff or mess with certain configurations?any help I'd appreciate thx.

You should just be able to plug the controller into a USB port on your computer. I've heard this isn't easy with XBox controllers. Two options I can think of:
1) Buy a USB game controller. Here are some at Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_2?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=usb+game+controller&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Ausb+game+controller)
2) Buy a Playstation to USB adapter and use your PS3 controller. Something like this should work (http://www.amazon.com/Fosmon-Technology-Playstation-Controller-Adapter-3/dp/B00HYFJX70/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1428770599&sr=8-4&keywords=ps3+to+usb).
I like option #2 better and it's what I use (though actually mine is a Playstation 1 controller, but it looks like it's the same shape as a PS3 controller).
After that you'll have to configure it to run with FFXI. There should be a program called "Final Fantasy 11 Config". It's pretty easy to figure it out. It might take a couple tries to get the configuration to what you're used to.

Thx for the info,as I already own PS3 controller I decided to try that first, however I plugged it in via usb and it said usb device was installed, but pressing the playstation button on controller wouldn't actually turn controller on for some reason,it was just flashing like it wasn't connected, don't know if I missed anything.i found the ffxi config options but didn't try setting gamepad controls yet as I can't actually get it to turn on even tho it's connected via usb.

I use the Logitech Gamepad F310. I just plug it in, and it works. I do adjust the settings with the config app. I like the controller, but they break too often. I'm not as careful with them as I should be though, so that may be a factor. I have a lenovo Y510P on windows 8.1.

I forgot about that part. Check the gamepad input on the computer first. Go to Start > Control Panel and there should be a box in the upper right corner to search. Search for "game" and there should be an option "Set up USB game controllers". Click that link. should get a list of installed game controllers. Select yours and click "Properties". There should be options for Calibration, and on another tab, an option for Testing. Go to the test tab and press some buttons and wiggle the joysticks to see what happens.

That's what I use to use a PS2 controller with my PC.
PS3 and Xbox 360 controllers require special drivers to work fully with FFXI. PS3 controllers require special drivers just to work with Windows at all.

Thank you for all your suggestions and info,I found the option for calibration and testing PS3 controller in my laptop control panel,it picked up the PS3 controller but testing it didn't seem to do anything, calibration was same too and the lights were still flashing on controller as if I wasn't connected.i might have to look into getting a Logitech one instead of I can't get PS3 one too work,it's annoying because it recognises it's there but can't get anything to happen.
