The Vana'diel Project is probably the strangest announcement I have ever seen. First we get the sad news that development on this game (in terms of major version updates and content) is going away. It becomes clear the game is being sunse--wait what? Two apps? It's strange, and bizarre, to talk about how you are, in ways, expanding the product line of FFXI while also saying "After November we're pretty much done."
No one is going to play the native app. That much is clear. No current player is going to care to 'restart' the game over, and play the same game, watered down, on a smaller screen. Market research at Square-Enix seems to be a very scary place.
The one thing that I actually was excited for was FF Grandmasters. Why? Because it is new. It's a new entry in the series. Maybe even new story elements. I have always wanted a newish version of Vana'diel to play around in, either in MMO or single player form. And you announced it but--only for Japan. Why? WHY? I don't understand. It's not like you have to worry about producing physical copies of this game. It's a mobile app. You translate the interface, and for a mobile game, this likely isn't going to be that much text anyways.
I do not understand how these decisions are made. I was actually excited about Grandmasters because it is new. People might actually try something new. Your watered down native application is not new. I don't know why you would invest in such a thing in the first place.
Please reconsider releasing Grandmasters outside of Japan.
