View Full Version : Special Account IDs
Dual boxing is a thing. I don't think it's going away. SE might as well embrace it. I feel it would be beneficial for them to offer a special account ID that would let that character be logged in with an additional character from the same account. Naturally it would cost more, probably about 10 dollars instead of the normal 1.

i would agree with something like this but not $10 i would go fore $5 to be able to use the account at the same time
but i think it would require a modification to POL because if you try to log in with another char from one account it will automatically log out your first char

I think it will log you out of POL if you try to log on to POL from another instance. Logging on another character does not kick the first one out. I have an nvidia card and I get display driver crashes a lot of the time. Sometimes it takes my character forever to log out of the game and so I will sit on a mule and search for my main to know when I can actually log in again.

and as far as i have seen POL is the backbone of logging in to ffxi(have you ever tried to log in to the same account from 2 different computers before?? your first logged in char get forcibly logged out as soon as you log in to the same POL account before you even try to log in to ffxi)

Right, when you log on to POL, POL will kick your other login off. On the other hand your content IDs can be logged in simultaneously.

Dual boxing is already acknowledged and legal under the user agreement as long as the user is in control of both characters (not using an automated process). In that sense, it's already "embraced." But I think they would rather make you pay for another account to do it so I doubt they would ever change that.

Well I said 10 because I was rounding down if they what to charge $12.95, fine. It wasn't the goal to save 3 dollars a month it's to be able to use the characters I already have. I have perfectly good mules who would make very nice dual boxes. And if I try it and find dual boxing isn't for me I can just downgrade them back into mules again.

There's a one-minute delay for a character to despawn after a disconnect. Logging into the account on another system or in another instance forces a disconnect. You cannot log back into the character until it has despawned, which can allow you to log into a mule and still see your other character online. That is working as intended. The system does not allow two characters on the same account to be logged in at once, which is why the disconnect is forced.

But who says they can't change that....they'll make anything happen for more money. I think they might make more money having people pay $5-$10 to allow a mule on the same account to log on same time rather than having to buy another full account for $13. I think the amount of people that would start dual boxing a mule for $5 would outweigh the amount of people that pay for a separate account. This would also get the community more involved again in the content by raising a new character up again from scratch.

I think what the other person is getting at is it would take some work to change the system so that your multiple-enabled characters can all log on but normal login policies are still enforced, it would require checks and hooks that are certainly not already present. Because they make more money from people having second accounts than they would under the proposed system, I can't see them being in any way motivated to do it.

I would love this, I've wanted it to happen for a long time. I would gladly pay the cost of another account ($12.95) to simultaneously log in with a separate character. I have two characters on one account, both with multiple well geared 99's. I also know for a fact that there are some people that share an account (a mistake they made when they first started the game) but would not speak up because it violates the user agreement. There's been some support for this in the past, too (see my sig).
Like I said before, if they feel the need to charge $12.95 a month for it, the same monthly cost of a second account, so be it. If anything it might coax people who don't have dual boxes to try it, which would increase revenue. I don't see how this would possibly make them less money, and doubt it would be so much a hassle to not warrant giving it a try.

Hmm, I've never timed it but it feels like there have been times when I have been locked out of my main for more than a minute. I'll have to time it next time my computer has a display driver crash.

The problem is the logout is in the PlayOnline backend that FFXI runs on top of. POL hasn't had much of an update since the change to the billing system. The dev team we have now probably doesn't have a grasp to make big changes to it, as the whole system dates back to 2002. Also, by having it kick you out saying you were logged in from another client, you know when someone is breaking into your account. It logs you out before it even does a check of your active Content IDs, so it can't tell if you are trying to log in to a special Content ID. The system was also to prevent you from playing two PlayOnline games at once, when there were multiple games on the service.
The solution is simple, just activate a second account and dual box with that. If the fee was going to be the same, you may as well just have a second account to log in to. That saves them from having to redesign the backend system for a pretty niche case, when they already have a solution that works.

The thing that I would like to see happen is make it so that you can take a content id and split it off to a new account. I don't think it's so much of an issue anymore but I remember back in the day that a lot of times peoples' significant others would make a second character on the same account and then be really sad when they realized they wanted more playtime.

Dual boxing on the same account would also create potential balance problems with the modified delivery box.
Bring 3 characters to a SKC fight, send yourself all the chapters. Suddenly you're getting 12 per run. The same could be applied to many other situations.
Even if the back-end wasn't a limiting factor, I think this is extremely unlikely to happen. Splitting characters to different POL IDs(with limitation) would be a much more reasonable solution.

Only then you would have people leveling characters and selling them. I think getting 3 times the chapters would be less of a balance problem especially since getting chapters is stupidly easy. POL is overdue for an update anyway. It's actually one of the reason I don't feeling like starting up FFXI.

I don't get what's so wrong with being able to transfer a character from one PlayOnline account to a new, separate one. The only catch would be that the new one would be under the same Square Enix ID. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe you cannot unlink a POL account after it has been attached to your Square Enix account. This would eliminate any potential RMT threats since only the Square Enix ID holder can pay for that account.
