Story regarding Megabosses?

I've been wondering, Kirin, AV, and PW all are different from most HNMs in that they have dialog. The things they say make me wonder who they are, and why they are where you fight them. Does anyone else wonder about this?

I remembered hearing something a long while back stating that Kirin was used by the Zilart to power Sky, though I think the source was more likely than not just an off the wall theory.

They do release official books, the Ultimania guide series, which is always Japan-only. FFXI had at least 2 that I seem to remember.

*nods* and I've read translations of some of the parts of those, but it would be nice now that we have more dev interaction to hear information like that translated to the community. That and I think there's a lot of stuff still left unsaid, I remember hearing that the last Ultimania was pretty much just a recap of the missions with no new information.

Offhand, I know that Alfard (Abyssea-Grauberg HNM) was the fiend that destroyed Abyssea-Bastok and killed President Karst.

Also, King Ranperre soloed Vrtra... I think with the Lightbringer. Ranperre maimed Vrtra (which is why he cannot fly like Tiamat, Jormungand and Ouryu). Ranperre spared Vrtra's life - on the condition that Vrtra would agree to serve as guardian to the Royal Tomb and protect it from grave robbers. (Explained in a Tav. Safehold quest).
