The Vana'diel economy desperately needs buy orders. Why? Because items that sell slowly are incredibly hard to buy and sell. If an item has a price history of selling slowly at low prices, it's not worth using an auction house slot to try sell, even if there's a buyer willing to pay a large price for it immediately, because the seller has no way to know about the buyer. If a buyer can use one of their own AH slots to ask for an item at a certain maximum price, then sellers can see that someone wants to buy their slow selling items and trade becomes possible.
