Been trying to login free on a cancelled account but everytime it wants to pay, don't know whats goin on any idea?

I was getting the same problem. Had to bite the bullet and reactivate when I get paid. My account went inactive Monday. I have a feeling the account had to be inactive a certain length of time.
Also, when looking at the main FFXI page, you get an overlay about the free login event. Clicking it takes me to a page from 2009 http://www.playonline.com/ff11us/campaign/wcb/
I've also seen a page for the free reactivation from December of 2013 http://www.playonline.com/ff11us/campaign/11th/wcb.html and the link to download the FFXI installer is removed. They're making it really hard for the players they have reactivated to install the game if they got rid of their discs when they quit. I'm having to point returning friends to torrents.
