This message is for SE and anyone who is in favor of trying to convince them to make 1 server for the people who liked playing the real ffxi. I'm not trying to make a debate thread nor am i trying to hear people tell me this will never happen. Basically my goal is to find out if there is enough people who loved the old game, for us to create some kind of petition or something, to ask for just 1 old time server. I have talked with a lot of players and i know there is a number of people out there who would love this. It can't be that hard for SE to do....there are many MMO that support different type of servers like pvp, role playing, ect. They would never have to update anything...and it might actually attract a lot of old school players to come back to the game, the game they love, the game SE decided to kill without our consent. To clarify what kind of server we would be asking for, it would be before the 75 cap was broken(obviously). The state the game is in at the moment is bad and i'm thinking of quitting but if this happened i would stay, why not hit all their fan base? make a server for us too! You can keep the new players who like to get things easy, and yet you can keep players like us (and possibly get back old players). IF YOU AGREE POST BACK AND LET'S SEE IF WE CAN MAKE THIS HAPPEN! IF YOU DON'T AGREE OH WELL GO PLAY WITH YOUR NPCS OR GO AFK FROM LEVEL 30 TO 99 IN ABY!

That really wouldn't work at all. The structure of the game from back then required more people. It worked largely because people had no choice. These days, server populations are smaller and the percentage of people who would actually be interested in an old school server would be smaller still. You'd have your server, but getting that 18 man alliances you need to do a lot of the endgame content would be virtually impossible, and since the game wouldn't be solo friendly, you wouldn't have much to do.

and to zarchery i see what you are saying, but i think the server could get a few hundred players, finding 18 man alliance would not be impossible. i mean the server i'm on now has only 600 or so players on usually, i bet this type of server could get almost that if there was just an option to choose to make a character on one.

So you want to pay for a game that will never be updated, ever?
You want a game where XP party invites could take 5-10 hours to get an invite?
You want endgame where only a small handful of players do it, at set times and if you annoy any of them you won't ever do it?
Is that what you want? Old FFXI worked because everyone was forced to do it and the game was very popular.
Try make a shout to level the old way and see how many players take you up on it, that will give you an idea of how many players want what you're asking for.

I honestly would love to see a "old timer server" come online, for one reason and one reason only:
It WOULD REMOVE the "awesome elitist players" (yea see what I did there? eh? eh?) who shout and scream and cry for level 75 caps from the servers and give them a little hole to play in, and leave the rest of us to our business.
Heck, maybe SE can talk Tanaka* out of retirement to run it and give them all the side grades and impossibly hard content which can't be beaten in a reasonable time they want.

I really don't think you would get enough players to get more than 100.
Simple fact, 99% of the people who say they want a 75 cap server really don't (they say they do because they think it gives them some kind of FFXI street credit, like "I leveled my jobs before abyssea, I'm more hardcore then you" type of crap, but I am keen to smn burns, and bird party burns, and all sorts of other power leveling done pre abyssea, so leeching in abyssea is no a valid point in any convo ever #getoverit @abysseasavesFFXI, #solongelitestjerks). Those that really do. Go find them, they are out there and anyone with half a brain can find them.
If you really think that an 75 cap server would be okay? I mean really? At that point in the came there was very limited end game content. Sea, Sky, Dynamis (every 3 days) Einhjar (Every 3 days), Salvage, Limbus, KSNMs, and Campaign. . . oh and king camping. But that was it. No Delve, no Skirmish, No abyssea to pass the time or get merits. You would be limited to Meriting on Birds out in Mamool Ja.
Most jobs would suck, because every update sense then would be reverted. I don't think you really want that. It would take about what? a few months to get tired of it all and want to be 99 where you can do things alone again. Everything would need 6 people, and unless you got 6 very good like minded people you would be SOL. As I mentioned before sure make it an option but I really do not think that people really understand what they will lose if they made a server that was capped at 75 with no updates after WotG.

So what snapshot in time would you use? Pre-Abyssea when the game was wheezing along? Pre-WotG when ToAU was winding down? CoP time?

I'd vote for the update where DI & SW were added, and stop there :)

so many interesting assumptions of why i want this server, i'm not an elitist, and i never said it made me better to play in that era. i just liked HAVING to work together to get anything done, everything now is soloable except some skirm, wkr, and delve. i want fun and challenging with a sense of accomplishment. i never said i have a "more hardcore than you attitude" you guys are hilarious. and you keep saying i don't know what i'm asking for, wtf? i've been playing since 2004 i know what game i enjoyed the most. and to clarify that other question i think the best time would be before WoTG came out, but w/e if no one is interested i guess it'll never happen. Or the people i've spoken to who said they would like this don't frequent these forums very often if at all. I'M NOT SAYING KILL THE GAME YOU ARE PLAYING I'M SAYING GIVE US ONE SERVER, AND FOR THE LAST TIME, I KNOW WHAT I'M ASKING FOR. MMO SHOULD HAVE TO RELY ON OTHERS, OR ELSE YOU SHOULD JUST BE PLAYING A SINGLE PLAYER GAME THAT YOU DON'T NEED TO PAY A MONTHLY FEE FOR, TY FOR YOUR COMMENTS =)

Like Rubicant says, I think 600 players is a pretty optimistic estimate to begin with. Even with that kind of population on the normal servers as the game is now, people complain of difficulty finding enough people for 6 man content. 18 man content would be even worse on an even smaller server. To say nothing of coordinating the schedules of those players.

Assuming you mean a Full Reset to the years 2003-2009, that would be pre-level synch.
Which means for xp parties you would need ; people online and wanting to xp, wanting to xp in your level range, wanting to xp on the jobs your party needs.
And that worked, just about, when the servers were packed with people in the early days. And even then, if your PLD connection lost, you would spend ages trying to get another PLD in your level range who was online and wanted to xp. Just from a numbers perspective, I don't see how this could be achieved on a small server. People don't always want to xp on certain jobs at certain levels, they might want to do crafting or events or level other jobs at other levels. The old system worked (most of the time) because of the sheer weight of numbers in the old game, but I can't see how it would work on a retro mini server.
Edit : You would also need people to craft all the weapons and equipment for the AH, since you reset the game to pre-level synch, you would need level-appropriate gear, and since there won't be any sparks gear you can buy for levels 1-75, and there won't be any treasure caskets which drop the correct level armor and weapons for the zone you're in, you would need people crafting a lot of of gear for capped fights and for just levelling up. And they would be too busy doing that full-time to join the xp parties lol. The old system crafting / AH worked well because of the sheer numbers of people and the specialists who spend all day crafting/fishing and stocking up the AH with stuff people need. Again, from a numbers perspective, I don't think a voluntary retro server would have the numbers of people to keep the crafted system running.

Although the idea itself is appealing, I wouldnt go there. I liked the old ffxi more because of social aspects, it seemed easier to learn to know new people in a forced long-time pt, nowadays people seem to stick to their ls and my friendlist has never been smaller sadly enough.
But in all honesty the game has changed alot and so has my life, I wouldnt be able to do anything on an oldschool server. By the time i would get an invite and arrive at the camp i would have to go cause rl duties call :/

He obviously never played DRG back in those days, presumably he was a BRD or RDM when those were 'required' jobs or whatever FoTM was at the time he wants this time-warp to happen to.

lineage ii is doing something similar to this, making a server on old rule sets just with a few of the quality of life adjustments added, turns out it was so popular they've now got something like 3 servers like this!
