Brand spanking new?
Records of Eminence (http://www.bg-wiki.com/bg/Category:Records_of_Eminence) Sparks would be your go to, pick up some of the high level weapons from the exchange NPC with them and vendor them. Another thing is if you do any Grounds of Valor (http://www.bg-wiki.com/bg/Grounds_of_Valor) and you open the brown chests, occasionally there will be a real elixir inside (not the temp ones like from blue chests) which vendor for 7k each.
Depending on where you started and your progression quest/mission wise, there may be some quested scrolls that are worth a fair bit too that you may not need immediately. Some that come to mind are Warp (http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Mean_Machine), Warp II (http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Curses,_Foiled_A-Golem!%3F), Sleepga II (http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Searching_for_the_Right_Words), Utsusemi: Ichi (http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/The_Sahagin%27s_Stash), all of the Whm Teleport- spells (http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Teleport#), and I'm sure others that aren't coming to mind at the moment.
And if you're brand new, welcome to the game. ^^/

Also, as far as Brown Casket go, a lot of them contain armor for their level range (the zones level range), these can NPC for a decent penny if you collect them, I know some of the early stuff like Iron Chest and such are like 3k a piece.

There is also farming and npcing things like Mercury, & doll shards, they drop plentiful and though their prices to the NPC are not earth shattering it adds up when you sell several stacks of them.

IF you want advice on class things, I recommend reading the "Class guides" on FFXIAH.com, not all jobs have one, but most do... as far as a populated server? Asura is pretty populated, and you're on Asura now... In fact in the last few days I've seen shouts from a LS recruiting new players, if I see it again I'll let you know the name.

I honestly shouted for a LS on Bahamut and got a decent social one. There is also the FFXI facebook group that you can talk to ppl and find ppl on your server: https://www.facebook.com/groups/2204703925/ -- note it is not an official SE sponsored group but has 5k members so *shrugs*
voiddust in exchange for conquest points from a voidwatch purveyor should net you some nice cash on the ah too, you don't need to gain voidwatch access to be able to get voiddust from those npc's either

You can make some decent money from the log in campaign. Quite a few people have mule accounts just for that purpose. Level thief to 99 and dnc to 49. Get all the thf related sparks stuff and go farm dynamis. a couple hours a day, a couple of days a week there will keep you paid well enough to gear whatever job you prefer playing if it isn't thief.
