please note before I start that this is not a complaint or cry thread, im just wondering as iv recently come back after a few months and iv noticed that after the r/e/m update which seemed to boost the player base that it seems to of dropped of again, im wondering if given the low amount of servers left with the low amount of players on them are se going to keep this going with new content or even have I missed a post or thread with them explaining one way or another. also given the people that read and post on the forum seem to be in the know whats all your opinions on the topic. whats our ffxi future hold. discuss

The game population hasn't dropped or raised any significant amount lately, so while its not dying, its not flying either. Don't feel so bad, A thread like this has been popping up weekly for almost 5-6 years, hell since Treasure of Aht Urhgan came out... It happens a lot, population does wane and grow.

I don't see the game ending any time soon, declining population? Probably, most old MMOs decline, but it doesnt take a lot to keep an MMO profitable, especially a subscription one with a skeleton crew.

They've been doing monthly updates for about the past 8-9 months now, sometimes with tiny updates in between to add a few trusts or something. While each and every update doesn't bring droves of brand new content with it, nearly every single one has added more to do in the game. Whether that "more to do" lasts long or not really depends on your position in the game. Granted, some of the high tier BCs are just about dead on arrival with their seemingly confused itemization lately. Most have at least 1 or 2 items that are desired though.

I don't think the game will be slowing down anytime soon. Remade BCs with pre-existing resources shave off a lot of their development time, and allows them to spend a few months focusing on creating new areas/missions/events. I'm curious what will happen when the day comes that there are no more mission BCs to remake though, as that's their filler content currently. Not that I'm complaining, many of the fights are fun, and some have some useful gear, just curious what their filler content will then become, or if they'll have to scale back from the monthly updates.

Lately I've been seeing some pretty abysmal numbers at NA hightime, but higher numbers than I've seen in a while on JP hightime. I don't see any reason to panic, I think/hope we're a long way away from anyone at SE thinking about shutting us down.

I remember in 2005 people were saying "this game is dead, it won't last another year" then TOAU came out. The same thing happened before WOTG, people saying the game was finished. And before ABY, same thing.

And right now the game is attracting returning players, my friend from 2004 who I partied with until 2009 when he quit the game, he just came back to the game this week - and he loves the Home Point Warps, Trusts, lockstyle, Moghouse space, the AH sales sorting system, being able to solo to obtain high level gear, being able to work on his RME solo or in small groups. Every time I log in he /tells me how happy he is that he returned to FFXI in 2014, because it is so much more "user friendly". And he is a veteran FFXI player who was discouraged from playing because of tyrant-linkshells and serious impossible-to-solo-unless-you're-a-beastmaster grind of FFXI v1. The new game is much more fun, my friend says, because he doesn't feel that it is set up to make him miserable.

Imho, all things considered, FFXI is the greatest videogame of all time. And true classics never die.

I have to agree ffxi is the best game of all time but do you think there is a diff compared to the other times people said the game will die due to the low amount of people that play now

FFXI will be around so long as they are making money from it. FFXI has a relatively healthy JP population. They are making money from them, and a little from us.

When FFXI is no longer profitable, it is likely that they will either do something to try to make it profitable again (F2P Model, perhaps?).

The game has a pretty active development cycle, and nothing has really indicated to me that it's on the way out.

I really wish they would server merge the NA/EU population though. It can be lonely on there.

I think FFXI can change and adapt to stay relevant to the marketplace, as we are seeing the game is becoming more user-friendly and the Dev Team have provided us with a feedback platform and they are responding to our questions, and quite often they are acting on our feedback.

I think FFXI is learning from its mistakes. FFXI is a pioneer, it is the first long-running online RPG that has a sophisticated game engine and a devoted fanbase dating back 10 prequel games in the series. FFXI is a unique game and it stands alone in these factors, it is breaking new ground in hitherto uncharted terrain. Consequently FFXI can not "learn from the mistakes of others" because FFXI is the first game to deal with many of these problems and responsibilities.

I think there are many people who will always be FFXI fans, and there will always be new players who want to try it out, especially now the game is easier to get started in. And looking around the marketplace, there aren't any other games I would want to play on a yearly subscription basis - most games interest me for a few days to a few months - FFXI still interests me after 10 years and I know a lot of other people who feel the same.
