Hello!
As a participant of the last campaign it was a great way to experience all the changes since I last played. While it doesn't have to be every month since we have monthly updates and for two weeks, it can be for a weekend every 3 months or so.
I think this would be a great way to entice some potential returning players to return! :)

The number of players before the free weekends compared to the number of players after were almost exactly the same, the free weekend had almost no impact on player numbers. Since the whole point was to get people to re-sub it didn't really work out that well.
The biggest problem with XI is simply that it's not that great a game for long-time absent players to return to, there is nothing you can really do in that 2 days that will convince you to stay. You will be out of touch with new content and be unable to do it (good luck getting an invite to do anything worthwhile as a long time absent player), all the world zones are empty etc. It's nice to return to for free for some nostalgia but to pay to play the game when you are so far behind and the game being unfriendly of anyone in that position really isn't a good incitement to start paying to play it.
If ever a game was not set to have a free weekend play system as incitement to come back XI is it.

I came back as a long-absent player, and I was caught up to new content within a week. It really wasn't all that difficult.

By "long absent" do you mean a month or two? If not, I call bull... I left the game in November 2012 (just a few months before SoA came out) when Empy, voidwatch and NNI gear was top of the heap. There was no monstrosity, delve, skirmish, reives, high tier battlefields, af/relic reforging, etc, etc. Even with a strong, established LS, it took me months to get up to speed. For a new player with no support, it would be way harder. I'm in a position now (7 months after returning) where I finally feel like I've caught up, keeping in mind I am trying to play more casually so I don't burn out like before, so I don't dedicate my life to the game, but still play quite a bit.
Anyway, my point is stop making it seem like accomplishing everything is a cakewalk, because it most certainly isn't.

Make the XP, CP, double drops, Abyssea, etc. campaigns permanent. We don't need campaigns really. We need stuff to be worth doing. For example: Soloing mobs in Drifts at 1.6k XP is not worth doing. Soloing them at 3.2k is.
