View Full Version : how to make money?

I have been reading so much about this game about how to make money but I have a problem: Everything I read says to sell things on the auction house or buy things on the auction house to improve crafting. My problem is that I don't have enough money to afford many things in the auction house, the auction house is mostly empty and doesn't have the things I would need to do that, and the things I find to sell are never purchased.
Someone bought me a tarutaru fishing rod and I have been trying to go fishing. I read this site here: http://www.finalfishing.com/Guide.aspx but nobody buys any of that in the auction house either. I wanted to up my clothcraft skills to make stuff for myself since the npc doesn't sell anything good and the auction house is so expensive, but leveling that is so slow when I can not even save my money I earn from the books [called TOV books?] to buy the crafting stuff in AH because the stuff isn't even there.
So I don't know how to make money in this game. I just use the books and sell stuff to NPCs because nobody will buy it in the AH. I am playing on Leviathan. Can someone please tell me what monsters I should kill that drop items I can sell to players at a price which would not keep me poor? I don't understand the AH/Player Economy enough yet to know what to do with monster drops. My linkshell has helped me with money and armor but I want to be able to earn it myself. I just don't know what to do. It seems like everyone is rich and since they are rich they charge a lot for things. If someone could please make a list of items that sell very well in the AH and tell me (and everyone else that reads this) how to get them (from which monster) I would really appreciate it. I have been saving my wind and earth crystals but I try to sell the other ones in the AH and nobody buys them. I put cheap too for 50 gils because the npc only buys it for 15 gil. But if I want to buy 12 of them it is 1500 gil. Nobody buys my crystals so instead I trade it to the gaurd now.

Hello! First of all, which Auction House are you selling through? I'm not on Leviathan but on my server, the AH in the starter towns is completely dead nowadays. To sell anything worthwhile you have to auction through the main Jeuno AH, which usually trades briskly. They're planning to resolve this soon by merging the AHs but in the meantime, definitely pop your items up in Jeuno. It's worth it even though the fees are higher.
If you haven't been to Jeuno yet and need to make some cash in the starter town you're in, try to figure out what people in that starter town are looking for - quest items and crafting ingredients tend to sell best. In Windurst for example I can usually offload cooking ingredients at a reasonable pace and in Bastok what sells decently is stuff for the Norg ninja quests (zinc ore, rusty subligar etc). The latter is because the Norg auction house is linked to Bastok's.
If you mention your level and location in the game maybe we can think of some decent moneyspinners to get you going :)

Thank you for replying. I am level 23 BLM and lvl 14 WHM. I am in Selbina right now but I know how to get to Bastok and Windurst. I have been to Jueno one time but I forgot how I got there because I was following someone else. I just don't know what I can sell from monsters that people will buy. When you say 'cooking ingredients' I don't know what that means because I don't know how to cook yet. I also don't know which monsters drop desired items. I hope there are some that I can beat up at my level who drop things the higher level players want. Thank you again. You responded so fast. I appreciate your time helping.

Is your charname actually "Super"? if so thats incredable lol usually names like that have long gone.
I just rerolled and so I have the fortunate object of knowledge to know what I need, what I dont and usually what sells. I'm starting scratch so just like a new player, so far I've made 200k from Crystals i got all these from levelling WAR to 30 then now levelling NIN. I also got a fishing rod and some paste, spent about 30k in total but fished up Moat Carp as people still buy these in Sandy AH, tho I got a little bored after 15 stacks and so only made 90k (sell @ 6k each)
I think best way for low level is crystals and trekking to Jeuno to sell them. Just try not to spend money that you dont need to, because you can survive with bare minimum and especially with the EXP increase you can fight weaker mobs for still very good EXP. I've been roaming in level 1 gear most of time, just changed war @ 20 to beetle.
Once you're higher levells there really is not a lot to buy as all is abyssea XD or from events.

Yes my charname is really super. If you are on Leviathan you can send me a message and hangout if you have free time. I love to meet new people. Everyone always says something about my name. Most of them think I am an old player and good at this game, LOL.
I think it is a name from an old player that got deleted though because I found this website called ffxiah that shows you how much something costs, but u can look at players profiles somehow too, and when I searched for myself it showed the necklace I bought for my wind crystal, but also listed dates and items I dont have. I think either the site is broken or it was an old player. This is the link to my real profile. My LS showed me how to make it. I wish I could put also into my signature as a smaller link bc even though I am not high level with anything I still am proud of my accomplishments because they mean I am still working toward improvement:

I will try to sell my extra crystals in the Jeuno AH. I thought all auction houses were the same place. I didn't really ask anyone if they were different because I just assumed the game would not be built with an extra obstacle like that.
The fishing site says to save some moat carp for an important mission, but I will put all the extra ones into AH and see if people buy them. If you know anything else that I can sell please put it too. I have been hunting down crawlers to get enough silk threads to make a stack - someone in the game taught me that. If any new players are reading this if you click the link I put for the fishing site it says where you can fish the Moat Carp he is talking about.
You say 'only 90k' but that to me is rich. I am a mage so it is hard to save my money when I need to buy two kinds of spells now. They are expensive and that is why I posted this - so I can learn how to survive by killing monsters for drops (farming). Thank you for adding to my list. :D These tips are very helpful.
If anyone else has ideas please write them down. They will only serve to help me and any other new players who read here. It is hard for someone who is not returning to step into this game and understand the economy. There are sites to go to but they are sometimes too old and the information from real people who are playing now is so much more valuable than a website that might be out of date.

The beehive fragments dropped by most bees sell very well, as do the jars of honey. Honey is used in a lot of important recipes so it flies off the shelves on my server.
As you're 23, it would make sense for you to make Jeuno your base of operations, which will help a lot with selling on the good AH and also with levelling. The easiest way for you to get there from where you are is to head to La Theine from Valkurm, then go east there to Jugner Forest (grab the crystal from the big white telepoint on the way if you don't have it, too - it will be invaluable later on). Following the path in Jugner, go all the way through to Batallia Downs then run east to Jeuno. Jugner and Batallia are quite dangerous but you should be ok so long as you're careful and keep away from aggressive monsters.
I'd recommend homepointing there once you arrive. There's a good levelling area nearby for finding parties (Qufim) and once you have your chocobo quest finished you can leave whenever you want to go elsewhere. Later you can also take airships from Jeuno directly to the main starting cities (requires mission progress).
If you haven't done the chocobo quest yet, pop to Dangruf Wadi first (near Bastok) and collect some of the greens from the second tier hares inside - you can use these to gain the right to ride a chocobo once you get to Jeuno. The greens also sell very well in Jeuno if you manage to get some extras.
If your linkshell will oblige, asking for help getting the keys for your Khazam airship pass is also a good idea. This will unlock a great group levelling area for 25+, which again you access from Jeuno.
I'm afraid I play in Japanese so my wording may be off - I don't know what some things are called in the English client ;)

Bees drop: http://www.ffxiah.com/item/912/beehive-chip/?stack=1 which sell like hotcakes, You could also turn these into Beeswax which is only a level 5 synth, and then you get http://www.ffxiah.com/item/913/beeswax/?stack=1
These are used for Silent Oils, one of the most consumed items ingame lol
The quest related to "Moat Carp" is LuShang quest which is one of the best Fishing Rods in the game but it requires you to fish 10'000 carp, which runs down to about 8hrs/day for couple month lol. You make 100k from the fish trading but the rod can sell for near 3m. But you could just sell the carp for half that and you get your money more periodic rather than waiting for the big payday and not having anything until then.
I'm on Lakshmi sadly, if you was here I could help you since I'm starting Fresh XD

Copper ore to ingot, copper+zinc ore to brass ingot are both very good starter recipes and will make a good amount of money for a low level player. Look into farming silk thread from crawlers as well, they still sell well and for a decent amount.

Please understand I am ignorant to your terminology. When you write 'to ingot' and 'to brass ingot' does that mean I have to put them into a crystal to turn it into something? Also: I don't know where to get those items in the game. Can you tell me? If it's the auction house then I can not do it until I hunt more bees.
My playtime says 3 days and 7 hours (and that's not accurate because I left computer on overnight) I haven't explored everywhere yet and hunted all the different monsters. I'm trying to expose myself to as much as I can but this game is so HUGE that it is difficult even know some little things because I haven't discovered them, or nobody has taught me. I am very thankful for these forums in addition to the linkshell users. Without other people to help (directions to Jeuno are a *huge* help to me and so are all these good tips) this game would be overwhelming because it's so rich with things to do and it would take much much longer to make these discoveries independently. Sorry if all my questions are annoying and might seem silly, but I am trying to learn as much as possible from everyone so I help myself and teach others if I am able to.

Hey, I recently returned to the game with a fresh character and the way I'm making gil is farming goblin thugs for wild onions. You could farm them in gustaberg while farming bees or you could go to Outer Horutoto Ruins in E. Sarutabaruta which is packed with them. They sell for 15k a stack on your server and while they don't have the best drop rate it's a way to do some decent low level farming till you can take on the bigger stuff.
Also, you have to go to Jeuno to buy/sell for now. They do plan on merging the AHs since the starter towns are pretty empty.

Go to your home town, talk to the people and get quests from the towns people, they psy gil for completeing them.

Do your town missions, some of them pay in gill or equipment, also for kills you get conquest points you can usr for equipment from gate npc.

Copper and zinc ore are common drops off low level worms. You can craft them into ingots:
Copper Ingot: 4x Copper Ore, Fire Crystal (Goldsmithing level 3 skill cap)
Brass Ingot: 3x Copper Ore, 1x Zinc Ore, Fire Crystal (Goldsmithing level 9 cap)
If you do this I would do copper ingots until goldsmithing is at level 3, then work on brass ingots. FFXIclopedia (http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org) is a vital resource for crafting recipes.

Doing the missions might be a little tricky until high level, but once high level its very easy as its all uncapped now.
