I've been having problems for the last couple days, it's kinda hit or miss if this happens, as in it'll rarely log in normally, but usually it looks like this.

My laptop tends to get extremely hot and the fan is constantly running pretty loud. Any ideas? GPU going? Thanks in advance for any help!

I actually had that problem when i was using my sister's laptop. When i searched for an answer i found out that ffxi just doesn't render properly when it runs on a computer using a graphics chip and not a dedicated video card (or something like that). Sadly i did not find an answer to the problem and just took a hiatus from ffxi till i got my 360 :-(

yeha.. that definately looks like a GPU issue. you can get a similar effect if you crank down the LOD Bias too much (maybe it was positive bias.. forget which direction pulls the lower quality textures closer to your view plane). If it's running hot, it is likely underpowered for the game--or at least marginal. Might want to get an active cooling pad (one with a fan to pull heat away from the laptop) to help cool it down. Might help with the glitching when it overheats.

The only way I can seem to make it work is to check the files via playonline (which returns with no errors), start ffxi which is still messed up, and when I close it and open it back up, it seems to work fine. idk what the deal is but I may just reinstall (which is gonna take forever ; ;)
