Ok.. gotta take a moment for this one >.>

So, for years I report names, I won't put examples too offensive..

Satn = Satan (hello guys wth) / Viagra (c'mon really?)

We're not an advertising service, nor are we losing people so much that we can let this go, next thing I know I'll see nazi crap an whatnot.. if we give them an inch they take a mile guys.

So my request is for SE to make it so when we report this crap, an they wipe the name forcing them to do a name change, save us the extra reports! just toss in a script to load the banned name to the filter system so they can't "redo the name" after you went an wiped it!

Oh.. someone will complain.. why do I care blah blah let them repeat till banned, it only takes a few tries an their gone forever. LIES!

I've reported so many many names that I can't even post here that to this DAY have gone unbanned so spare me any retorts.

I'm not coming back to read comments, save your fingers tiny strength.

Once again, we pay.. make it happen.

I don't really agree, it's just a name. My friend Damnit had to change his name after years just recently and it's really more annoying for everyone who knows him than it was before because his name was forcibly changed even though no one really benefitted. As for paying, I pay to, I say not to do it.

Also what exactly is offensive? I mean back when Alexander was still a server we used to have mules named Pepsi and Walmart ect. I can't imagine that a server has soo many offensive names that you were reporting them on a daily basis unless it was to re-report a name or something.

Satn could just be "Satin" with a letter cut out. And Viagra, although a stupid name, is just the name of a drug. I think if I had my way, we'd ban names with stupid letter substitutions, like that guy who used to be around Carbuncle named "Niqtmaredemon". Because I guess he wanted "Nightmaredemon", but that was taken, so he thought "I'll just substitute in a 'q' in place of the 'g'. Close enough. They have similar shapes."

So they didn't add a number? Lol had a guy that was named Hesus get forced to change their name while people that pretty much had names like Iliketof***catgirlz not get busted.

Then there's "Clamslammer" on Shiva. Everyone loves that guy! No one finds his name offensive at all. Matter of fact, he's got a great sense of humor and is a nice person.

I do agree with that inappropriate names should be reported, and dealt with accordingly.

I am, however, not an advocate of automagical rule-enforcement. I probably feel that it's not too much of an effort to report a name I find inappropriate.

There are several reasons as to why I prefer a human doing the enforcement, and I even have an example from some years back.

Enter FINAL FANTASY XIV, the very first αlpha-phase. I was creating a character, using my name, Dragoy, just to find out it was not allowed. At length, I was puzzled, thinking it must be a mistake of sorts. After fiddling around for a while, I discovered it was because of the 'goy' within the name.

Apparently, goy translates to nation from Yiddish, but is also an (obscure, if I may say so) derogatory term in the same language.

I contacted the SqEX-support, and they kindly exclaimed they do not block this combination of letters. After I contacted them again, mostly repeating the previous explanation, hopefully more clear-like, they admitted that I was indeed in the right.

At some point, I believe between XIV and X|V, the name-filter did not block my name, and I thought they had come to some sort of senses. After a phase or two, however, it was again denied.

Blocking a name simply because it happens to contain a combination of characters which have no relation to a term like that is simply put ridonkulous in my considerably fair opinion.

Blubb!

The problem I have with it is that what one might find offensive may not always be considered offensive and by whose book do you judge the level of offensiveness? At the same time, who's truely hurt by a name? If my friend Damnit for instance was somehow offending someone for having such a name then who's really hurt more, my friends and I who must now refer to him by a different name after all these years, or the few people who took offense to an everyday phrase?

Demonjustin,

A gamemaster, or other support personnel would be the one dealing the final blow upon a name, or in other words, decides if it's fine or not.

They would, or should go by the rules set by the company, as with any rules they put in place.

I'm unsure if they ever published any sort of general list of offensive names, other than that it can't be intellectual property belonging to SQUARE ENIX or any other third party in your use of the Game (for example, naming a character after a celebrity, company, product or superhero.

However, I could guess that it might fit under this one: Profanity and Offensive Language. You may not use profanity or any language that a reasonable person would find offensive. The Game is for players aged 12 and older. You agree to behave accordingly.

Of course, I'm speaking by-the-book, and the final decision usually rests upon the gamemaster (or other) dealing with the matter (I have some personal experience with regards to this matter, but am not speaking as one of SQUARE ENIX nor its affiliates).

Different people are offended by different things, to say that it's specifically language a reasonable person would find offensive makes that list very short in my case since it would leave only racially derogatory terms and stuff such as that. The OP's examples of Satan and Viagra being names really wouldn't be something I think any reasonable person would find offensive. In either case I doubt it will matter anyways, as you said it's up to the GM in the end and I think that the fact people are left with their names is both a great thing and sort of a show they don't care much about it. I personally rather it that way because there are so few things worth the effort to mess with that person and everyone they know over a name, and still on a scale I put the player with the name and their friends above the person or people offended by a simple name in almost every instance.

Mhm.

I think it's great that we as users don't have to (or get to) decide which is good, and which is bad.

With regards to the specific examples there, the first one could be considered a religious reference (which usually is a big no-no), though it's a real-life name as well (a certain hockey player may be well known to some). However, it's misspelled so that I personally wouldn't read nor think it as satan.

The second example is definitely inappropriate in my opinion, as it could be seen as advertising a brand.

A name will never offend me, personally, but companies tend to play things safe, and I'm almost certain they would chop viagra under the rule regarding third parties and products.

But that's just a theory, however.

My theory. ^^

I don't understand why this is such a big deal.
As long as it's not directly profanity (Spelled correctly also) I don't see the problem.
If you're offended by someone's name; you really shouldn't be on the internet.
