In order to reduce lag in the many popular areas due to unattended characters how about creating some "Auto-Disconnect Areas". These areas would be located near currently congested areas (Port Jeuno near Abyssea NPCs, entrance to all MH, near all Cavernous Maws, any other area of concern) and the floor/ground would be of a different color than the surrounding one. Any character standing there would automatically be Disconnected from play after 60 minutes if not moving (same amount of time as using the maximum setting in the Global Settings menu).
This would surely help remove the tons of players too lazy to park their characters in their MH when not playing.

I know what you want to do, but some people chose places that people frequent to set up bazaars and that would ruin some of the shopping options I have when I'm shopping. Also colour zones on the ground would look tacky.
Though it would be nice to be able to not have to wade through idlers at times. There is a command in options to reduce the number of players loaded at one time, but I find that it causes problems when set too low during large party situations and I hate having to readjust game settings based on what I'm doing. Also hiding people with bazaars open is equally irritating when shopping.
I think it would be nice to have anyone determined to be idle at congestion areas to be pushed back after a time, much shorter than max timeout (Maybe 10 minutes). Give Abyssean NPCs a knockback effect that triggers on targets after 10-15 minutes of idling in front of them. Give Cavernous Maws and Mog Houses a draw-in effect for the same time limit.
The way I see it, the knockback would clear the walking path, and the draw in will solve the mog house entry/exit dilemma as well.

Like this idea, but nix the specific areas in a zone. Just make it the the main cities period (Jueno, Sandy, Windy, Bastok, Whitegate/Al Zahbi--others are far less in danger of congestion). Only reason to loiter their 24/7 is for bazaar, and that can just as easily go back to being Rolanberry and Batallia as it was for years. Was a lot easier to shop in Rolan-Mart back then...now the bazaars are kinda spread out all over.
Make it a long countdown though--sometimes people hang out there for hours trying to form up an alliance, so it does need to be a decent time frame for countdown. It should also give the player notice of the pending disconnect--kind of like the Sneak/Invis countdown with several staggered notices first, that way they have a chance to become active before getting bounced.
