View Full Version : Notorious Monster Announcements

It would be great if Notorious Monsters (NM) would place a notice in the log when defeated, just like a Conquest update or any other server log. For example, it could be something like:
"Player ______ from Linkshell ______ bested Fafnir".
There are several variances this could take shape in as well, for example: it could just announce it to those who are near or in the zone containing that NM; or, it could announce it to the entire server. Another variance might be the level of the NM to determine if it makes the announcement (i.e all NM level 50+ are eligible for the log entry).
The main reason I suggest this is that since there are still numerous NM that have ridiculously high and varied pop windows, it gives those with not as much time to pour into camping a chance to move on and do something else if the NM was recently defeated.
The obvious downside to this of course is that those wishing to maintain a monopoly on the NM's time of death would no longer be able to - but maybe with some creativity there could be a trade off. For example; as an experimental approach, it could be an optional feature that would allow the player to turn on/off in the config (menu): 'Off' would be the same behavior as previously when an NM was defeated, 'On' would place a server notice that the NM was defeated as I'm proposing, and also give the player TH+1 (just trying to think of ways to compensate the player for giving up the ToD).
In any case, I think the NM situation has significantly changed with Abyssea, and needs this in place (ironically, it probably could have saved us all some frustration if it was in place from the get go). Classic NM's like Argus and Simurgh who still have challenging windows seem strange to not have at least a mechanism for players to not sit staring like a zombie for hours on end.
PS - my first post, hello!

Or just leave a mule in the zone and fix your chat filters.

No. If you want the ToD for something, be proactive and get it yourself. The game should never reward you for doing nothing.

I think this is a good idea. I wouldn't go as far as to give a sort of compensation for giving up TOD. The best thing in an mmo is fairness. Like you said, it is not fun doing nothing for hours. This is why I "quit" many times back when level 75 was the cap. LFP for 3+ hours was not fun.
If you don't like LFP for 3hrs+, you won't like camping for 3hr+ either.

Giddeus farming would just leave me too much room to boost my ego on puny level 15-20 nms. :D I love my ego, he's brilliant, as he would be, naturally. Not that I have to worry about my Tenshodo fame at the moment, but still...It could probably create a lot of spam in people's chat.

If they were going to do this, then it should simply be a menu you can bring up when in the zone. I know their are people that use 3rd party programs to get some of this data. So, the menu would simply list the NM name and TOD.
Secondly, if this was done, there is no need to reward someone or even mention their name with a TOD. Who cares? Their reward was claiming and killing the NM.
Finally, there just plain needs to be a respawn time reduction on the ridiculously long respawn timers. Including HNM's. Also, pure lottery spawns need a weighted timer, the longer it hasn't spawned, the greater the chance with each subsequent window. You shouldn't need to hang out in a zone the entire day waiting for an NM to spawn.

uggh... just more crap to clutter the log and add more lag if you take the filter off--that is, if they also added a seperate filter for it.

This is such an amazing idea! I mean, who DOESN'T want to know when a random person runs up and kills Fungus Beetle...I just wish this was around when RMT were running rampant
Player Lovelygirl of Babygirlxx linkshell bested Serket.

This would be awful unless it was limited to only the zone.

Or maybe something that was clickable.. like an fov book.. or monument.. that would tell you when the NM last died.

you have a lot of stuff already handed to you, why do you need HNMs too? it's a reward to find and claim a rare nm, not have it given to you like a free hand out.

Idk.. i always thought the 24+ hour pop NM's was the worst part of ffxi...
it encouraged botters and other third party tools in the game..
It would be nice if they could find a way to do away with the long spawn times all together.. so more people can experience the "Challenge" of a "HNM"

That's what Nyzul Isle, ZNMs, and Abyssea are for. You fight at least 1 rendition of every HNM in the game in those areas. Obviously the gear rewards are different, but if we're talking about experiencing the content then it's already covered.

I always thought they should make HNM's rarity per person / group rather than a specific time on the server..
Ie.. you could only fight a specific NM once a week or once a month..
like an extended wait period for an enm....
maybe could implement an elite fov regime style pop system.. where you need your key item to assist in the fight.. and if you don't have it can't cure others or engage the NM..
for example you go to fight behemoth with your once a week key item. Win or lose you can't fight again for another week.. nor anybody else who assisted you would be able to fight..
If it was like the fov elite regimes.. outside people couldn't cure you.. and people couldn't join halfway.
With a system like that.. NM's would still be sufficiently rare.. and the drops they have would still be valuable and an "accomplishment"... but people wouldn't have to worry about competing against a bot

If this was something other than zone only, it would also give RMT/botters the chance to coordinate their entire play time, knowing where they had to be and when for every NM pop throughout the game. It has now no longer made it easier for those with less time to play, because every NM they try for will have hundreds of people camping it.
Even as zone only, ppl could still simply put their mules just into the zone so they don't have to worry about agroing anything and still get ToD.

I like the idea behind this approach. Unfortunately, the key item method wouldn't work in the current state of the game (limited number of items in KI list, forget if that was a PS2 or Database limit, but it's a design issue).
The Elite regime idea though...adding it to the hunt lists would be a nice alternative, as it could be handled server side. It could still be a bit of an issue though, as if you are in a party you could spawn it multiple times (each member could pop it). Might have to make it so party leader has to pop, or alliance leader if in an alliance--that way it limits it somewhat to 6 pops until you dissolve and re-ally. But, then again if they could only do it once a real-life week, and the ??? was on a 15 minute timer it might work somewhat. Either way, you'd probly still have a bunch of people camping the ???...
There will always be something to trip up the process I guess.

the 'elite hunt' stuff is nice and all, but we kind of already have 2 systems similar to that, which no one really even uses outside a few trials. remember VNMs and ZNMs? if we instated yet another system of hunting KI NMs outside of abyssea, whos to say it wouldnt just become a relic of the past like these two things?

What NMs are really worth SE putting in a huge new system for anymore?

Pretty much none. And for those talking about camping it, people with 3rd party tools already have the ability to not be there and get the ToD. And, a majority of those that use it are either RMT's or "Elite" LS's. So, of course they will complain if ToD's become easier to get. The reality is much of the gear is worthless or will be the base gear for upgrades. So, to have incredibly long spawn times for them is stupid. I was in a successful shell. And waiting around every 21 hours for a 3 hour window is stupid, worthless waiting. It isn't elite. Just an idiotic time sink. Made even more idiotic by the current value of that gear.
p.s. - Add to that how insanely easy it is to low man this stuff now.

yeah.. about the only thing I've given any thought to is maybe going after my Black Belt finally. Brown belt is still holding it's own somewhat... but... want more. There was a blurb from the dev team though that they are considering adding a comparable aby piece...so, idk if I'll go after BB now or not.

I'd rather see them add new non-abyssea NMs to the game than spend time designing a system to let lazy people know when their favorite NM died last.

KS99 is a great way to get black belts... the fights are similar to their non-battlefield counterparts and now that KS items are worthless it's about the only use left for them. The items have a decent droprate too... hard to ballpark but I'm guessing 1/5ish. Also now that we're 90 the fights are super easy (although I think many people found them easy at 75 too).

Oh no, time for me start a thread whining about how my BB needs an upgrade.
