I am messing around, I play ff14, but I am done all the content and just have weeklies and dailies, so I was thinking I'd try this in my down time.
What I would like to know is, what server should I start in, I am at level 8 on one sever, but I don't mind changing.
I can't even figure out the controls mostly, I mean is there a main menu?????
I can't seem to turn on my controller?
I kinda wan to try all the cool classes, but I think I need the basics first.
Also, when I leave full screen to check something on here, my game turn off, is there a workaround for this?

Servers are pretty equally really. It's a hard question to answer. There's no clear defined servers for certain things like roleplaying, PvP, etc. So it's whatever you end up at or want to start on or have friends on. There are ups and down to all servers but it's really hard to compare the intricacies of them all.
Your copy I'm assume came with the configuration guide, if you bought a copy or downloaded the steam version (at least the ones I've bought on Steam have some included). It would get lengthy to just copy the whole guide to access the menu and what not.
Here is a link to an old guide for using a controller on the PC. [Link] (http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/PC_Control_Pad_Settings_Guide_by_Crawlerbasher) That is assuming you're using a plug and play like an xbox controller or logitech. Look up your controllers configuration if it requires another program to be installed or running.
You only have access to Warrior, Monk, White Mage, Black Mage, Red Mage and Thief until level 30 on one of those jobs. You can do quests at 30 to unlock the rest of the jobs, a few will be hard to complete alone at level 30. At Level 18 you can unlock a support job. If you've been playing FF14, it's similar to cross class abilities but limited to one job.
Take some time and look around at the commonly used FFXI sites. Any of the wikis through a quick Google search will have the details. FFXIclopedia is outdated but is really good for a lot of the content that's not recent. At a low level it's still a very good resource especially because their quests/missions/monsters have testimonials so you can gauge how hard it might be for you. BGWiki and FFXIAH are more commonly used forums to discuss higher level and newer items and up to date with new equipment, just have to scour forums for info beyond data.
Trust (http://wiki.bluegartr.com/bg/Trust), Records of Eminence (http://wiki.bluegartr.com/bg/Records_of_eminence), Fields of Valor (http://wiki.bluegartr.com/bg/Fields_of_Valor) and Grounds of Valor (http://wiki.bluegartr.com/bg/Grounds_of_Valor) will be your best friends leveling.
Eyeballed also put a new player guide on here recently. A Newbie's Guide to FFXI 2014 (http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxi/threads/39291-A-Newbie-s-Guide-to-FFXI-2014?highlight=player+guide).
Hope you have fun.

Full screen is meant to crash if you leave the game. You have to run the config program in Windows to grant you Windowed mode, which won't crash when you switch focus. However, the game will crash if you change monitor resolution on any of your screens or an application opens in full-screen.
Controller has to be configured in the same FFXI Config application. Keyboard controls can be toggled in-game in the config menu, if you set to Compact keyboard mode. Default controls mainly use the numberpad.

hey thx, I did sort out controller, in the config, and the windowed mode. Got the controls more or less down.
I can't find where to get my starter gear in D'oria, but ill keep looking. Something that came with the D/L version, I bought the one with all the content, so I get bonus eqp.
I did hear of BGWiki, but it seems to be down, I don't think it still exists.
The other one you mentioned works, but, not exactly user friendly lmao. Kinda gota dig thru it.
I don't really mind the harder stuff, I will try to sort it out.
Just playing this for fun since I missed it the first time round.

BG is up, I'm using it for my LS voidwatch clears lately, and I updated this article recently.
