Recently got invited to my very first Abyssea and it went really good. I took a Thief up to my current limit break cap which is 70. In preparations to fighting Maat, I wanted to make sure all my dagger skills are capped for my level. Problem is they are only at 141 and I am having a hard time finding a place to skill up. I was hoping someone can give me some tips on how exactly this works. Today I tried out cape terrigan to kill Bandits for my testimony but the mobs evade all my attacks and my trust npcs are also missing, so I am getting no skill ups there either. I tried out lower level mobs but I read somewhere that if they are not Even match or decent challenge I will get nothing, which confuses me even more because that would mean I have to join a party dedicated for that instead of soloing since all I do is miss.

So to recap I am 70 with 141 dagger, what mobs should I aim for to reach the 200+ mark? Thanks for any of the replies in advance!

Take a level 1 dagger to Castle Zvahl Baileys [S] in Wings of the Goddess. Find the two Zvahl Fortalices and attack them. You can top your skill out at the cap of whatever you can have at level 82 this way, since they are level 75. Stand on the stairs near the liquid as far away as possible from the Fortalice while in attack range to stay out of aggro range of the demons. The goal is to do as little damage as possible while still doing damage, don't use weaponskills. They have 5000 HP and respawn every 30 minutes. That's 5000 hits on a passive enemy to skillup if you do it right.

You can get skill ups on any mob decent challenge or higher, but this rule actually applies to you're apparent level based off of the skill you're trying to level which can be much lower than your actual level. Thief has an A- dagger skill so since you're dagger level is 141 your apparent level is 46. This means you can get dagger skill ups on mobs that would check decent challenge or harder to a lv 46 thf (so probably lv 43+ mobs). Crabs are popular for skill ups since they can take a beating so you might want to try something like the Bigclaws in Sea Serpent Grotto/Misareaux Coast (43-48) or if you have a good acc set/food and a healer you could try the Robber Crabs in Kuftal Tunnel (60-63) which will take you past 200 skill.

The Fortalices are also a nice way to afk skill up but getting there can be tricky since you have to weave your way through a bunch of true sight mobs.

Use this table (http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Sea_Serpent_Grotto) to find out what level mobs you should be targeting

The Robber Crabs in The Boyahda Tree (http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/The_Boyahda_Tree) are also another good place to skill up. They can take you to about level 200 skill.

If you were killing bandits to try and get the testimony, I believe you were doing it wrong. I'm about 99% sure that for thf you have to actually use steal to get it from them. But otherwise yes, crabs have always typically been the skill up target of choice. No dangerous tp moves and i'm not sure if there are any crabs that actually link in the world which is always a plus.
