Ok so I had to buy the game via gamestop stor and downloaded it and installed it
just fine i launch POL and that works but when I try to log onto the game keeps telling me windows needs directplay app or something and then it locks up and i cant press anything or do anything until I restart the system. Gives you the option to install the app but comp locks up cant press anything

Ok thanks for the replay back Galka but that wasn't my issue but i did find a fix that worked for me.
There was a guide on web site what some else did but It was way to long and winded and 3 of the paragraph's said where complete waste of time.
Here is a shorter version >.>

Reinstall windows 8.1 and disable auto updates (I didn't have too you might need too)

Click on control panel---->Add remove programs------->Turn windows Features ON/Off

Click on the box install net frame 3.5 (if its already installed then your fine)

click the box Legacy Components make sure direct play is check should be when you check this box

Then click ok and then plug your PC internet cord back in or turn back on auto updates

install the updates and should be good to go. If you have any questions please message me in game if I'm there or leave comment here. Spreed this around

Here's is the best solution to your windows 8.1 problem, UNINSTALL WINDOWS 8. There, now you have a real PC again. :)

Keep downgrading until Bill Gates kids have to walk to school with holes in their shoes.

Or upgrade to Linux.

(Heh, sorry. I just couldn't not to, and definitely not trying to start any sort of debate or anything with regards to that topic! Really ! !! ! It certainly is an upgrade in several ways, especially if the other option is downgrading Windows, but I digress.)

So as to not go completely off the topic, there is some doubt in me about that it should require a re-install of the operating system. Even though I can imagine a situation where an update irreversibly breaks something; I have seen it happen, but I would have thought such breakage was a thing of the past.

Then again, they are in ways seemingly rather adamant in leaving old things unsupported, so it's no surprise. Moreover, I can't exactly test it for the time being, not owning a copy of Windows 8, so I can only be guesstimating.

Either way, good to see you got it working, and good job on sharing! ^^

XP and 7 were much better OS'....idk I guess the fact of despising the fact I DO NOT HAVE A START BUTTON AND REFUSE TO TOUCH 8.1 IS WHY I HATE WINDOWS 8...but that won't matter when I get my desktop fixed, it has Windows 7...which is nicer....
