I think that would be kinda cool to merg both 11 and 14 for a new story line or mode. Would be evening cooler if you could jump back and forth between games then you can log yourself into either one.

In its very early stages, they were actually considering linking the games together in some fashion, but that never came to pass. I think it's better they didn't in honesty, though being able to move between different worlds was cool conceptually.

The reason for the majority dislike of this thing is the fact that she is being overinflated in terms of SE shoving her down everyone's throat. She appears in these games.
Final Fantasy XIII
Final Fantasy XII-2
Dissidia Final Fantasy 012
Final Fantasy XIII: LIGHTNING RETURNS
Final Fantasy XIV
She overstayed her welcome way too much.

Before anyone goes "But Cloud has been in many more games" Well here's the thing, I think personally VII was meh (To me, just didn't immersed in the plot like I should have) But it was SE's first game with 3D polygons, it was their pioneer into what has become of FF today. Before that happened, it was all sprites and whatnot. But what really made VII special, was the enormous plot that was welcomed, and it didn't focus on the same main character -all the time-.
VII was about Cloud and gang saving the world
VII Dirge of Cerberus: Vincent and a touch of Yuffie.
VII Crisis: Core: Zack with Cloud as a supporting character
VII Advent Children: Cloud but everyone had a hand in it.
VII Before Crisis: (I'm not sure, I didn't get to watch it yet, but I know it's about like the Turks)
Itadaki Street (Just put in for kicks since they were so popular)
Dissidia
Dissidia 012
Final Fantasy Tactics (I forgot which one but I remember Cloud was a selectable character to take into battle.)
All in all, I would rather accept Cloud more than Lightning. Why? Because unlike Lightning, Cloud shared the attention in the spinoffs, in fact he was only a minor character in some of them, such as DoC. I know he's all mopey, and his hair is in poor taste cuz of the spiky, but I'd rather have him than Lightning.
Shoot I'd rather have Wakka from FFX rather than Lightning, and I straight up hate FFX's ginger butt monkey.
(Give it a few years, Japan is all hyped up because of a Tsundere girl being the main character, give them some time and they'll drop her like a bad habit...)

Though it's not an official thing, I like to think all the FF worlds are connected together through Atomos, since he's essentially a gateway to all time and space and has shown up in multiple games.
If you really want to link the games together, just do what I did; My character from FF11 was using Atomos until one day something went wrong and I got barfed up in Eorzea (Atomos was showing up just before Dalamud fell). That's the basic backstory to my character in FF14. Done and done, right?
Although, I still play FF11 on occasion so I like to pretend it happens in the "future", heh.

It honestly makes sense, and could be the reason behind the whole Dissidia thing aside from Cosmos and Chaos summoning them. Atomos could just be the method to cross dimension travel.

There is a whole plethora of problems if you link the games, such as you are a blu or pup or cor or etc and you show up in eorzea where these jobs do not exist, then you have fanboys screaming they want their hard earned gear and jobs from xi to transfer no matter how they explain it lore wise. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. Im happy they are separate games. FFXIV has too much fan service as it is already. keep the titles separate. Heck I wont even play dissidia because I find it a corruption of story and franchise and SE just trying to make a buck. They wont get my dollars for it. Plus they seem to focus on some of their worse characters...cloud and lightning.

They make a small reference to ffxi in FFXIV via crab minion whose flavor text is
"The mere sight of this wee wavekin may cause severe psychological trauma to those who spent years of their lives on faraway shores culling his relatives."
so there is that take that as you will.

So basically Final Fantasy VII round two?
The thing that puts the two in separate categories, the game's protagonist for VII played a musical chairs of deal, it wasn't always cloud getting rammed in our face, and I liked that it shared the stories of people like Vincent, Yuffie, Tifa, (Not Cait Soth, I have a bad relationship with him cuz of his cousin's late arrival to ffxi.)
But with XIII? Oh no it's the same protagonist, she's now final fantasy's poster girl, because she's got attitude and has the sex appeal to make any fan boy wet his pants. As long as te character is visually appealing, they'll sell w/e and not think twice about it. It only serves as a reminder to why I sometimes hate the fact that the JP portion of the community has the "Home field advantage" kind of thing when it comes to devs and the company listening to them while they ignore an entire globeworth of people.
Oh also did EU/NA ever get that poll or was it JP only?

I like Lightning and i'm not even attracted to women so that definitely doesn't factor on why I enjoy her character or on why some others enjoy her as well...
People just don't like Square no matter what they do at this point. XV and Lightning Returns can be great games and Square will still get hate from the loud vocal fans. That's how it is and how it will always be moving on to the future, this also doesn't just apply to Square either, pretty much every game company is experiencing this right now in different ways.
Back on topic.
This will most likely never be possible, also the fanbase of the two online titles are split and generally don't get along.
