View Full Version : Certain textures flicker in Windows 7 and Windows Vista

Platform: PC Windows 7 64-bit (also happens in 32-bit version, happens in Vista 32 and 64 bit versions also)

ISP: AT&T

Type of Internet Connection: DSL

Internet Connection Speed: 2.57 Mbps DL / 0.34Mbps UL

Frequency:Always

Area and Coordinates: Any

Monster Name: Rocs are the most obvious example but occurs with many textures and objects (another example is the face armor on the Conflux Surveyor, Cruor Prospector and Atma Infusionist NPCs)

Textures will appear to flicker, as stated above Roc type monsters are the most obvious example (their wings will flicker when then they are idle)

It doesn't appear to be a problem with any specific video card. I have seen the same problem with every Nvidia and ATI graphics card I have run FFXI on.

After further testing it appears to be caused by Windows 7/Vista forcing FFXI to use Shader Model 2.0. (FFXI is a DirectX 8 game and uses Shader Model 1.0) ATI's graphics drivers have a registry setting that can be used to restrict the maximum pixel and vertex shader version allowed regardless of what the video card actually supports. When Windows is restricted to Shader Model 1.0 (1.1 and 1.5 also work but Pixel and Vertex shader versions must match) then this problem goes away completely.

However this is not a solution because Windows Aero stops working (it requires Shader Model 2.0) as well as any games that needs Shader Model 2.0 or higher.

Note that this ONLY happens in Windows 7 and Windows Vista. It does NOT happen in Windows XP.

Greetings, Atomic_Skull!
Thank you for posting your concerns with flickering textures. I can understand how strange it is to only experience this with Windows 7 and Windows Vista, so I will make sure to submit the information that you have provided to the development team for a thorough investigation. I recommend keeping watch on this thread for any information regarding the investigation. I also suggest consulting www.PlayOnline.com for any possible developments regarding this matter, just in case. Thank you again for your report!

Hello Atomic_Skull,

We have received the results from Development and they have determined that this may be a technical issue. If you are still experiencing texture flickering, please contact our information center at http://support.na.square-enix.com > FINAL FANTASY XI > Contact. In the mean time, I will be moving this thread to "Technical Support" so we can receive some additional feedback or suggestions.

Thank you,

It's not a technical issue, I've seen the exact same thing on every Windows Vista and Windows 7 PC I've have installed the game on regardless of system specs and graphics card.

Again, this does not happen on Windows XP, only on Windows Vista and Windows 7.

The problem you described IS a technical issue. If its something thats specific to a piece of technology or hardware/software glitch/compatability problem then its technical.

Yes but it's not something that can be fixed by the user. It's something intrinsic to FFXI running on Windows 7 and Windows Vista. I've already figured out exactly what's causing it (see my original post)

Yes I have, I'm competent with computers I also know what dxdiag is and how to use it.. I'm thinking you just haven't noticed it before. I've seen this exact same thing on every Windows 7 and Windows Vista PC I've run the game on.

Anyway, here you go.

For the record, I have the exact same problem.

lol @ above.

You're not alone, this isn't a driver issue. I never see this on non windows 7/vista. Same hardware and XP, no flicker.

Thankfully it's a really minor issue and doesn't always show up (sometimes it depends on the angle and camera distance) but when you're idling or not doing anything intensive, it's something that you see sticking out.

Also depends on the angle of the "sun" lightsource in the zone as well. eg. the entrance to the area just in front of the guidestone in Jeuno as you run toward it from outside if you are the right distance from it and it's the right time of day.

Are you useing a wireless connection? If so that is the problem. I dont see any problems in the dxidag either. and sorry it took me a few days to respond back. i used a wireless connection to see if that caused the flickering and that was the cause it also would freeze for 1 or 2 seconds.

Why would an unstable network connection cause graphical glitches like we see here? It makes no sense.

To describe the bug, imagine looking at a bird (a roc). Look at the feathers, now imagine that the game can't make up its mind about which feathers are supposed to be on top of other feathers, so it changes continuously. Like way back when some games had z-buffer issues that caused the game to display things even if they were in reality obstructed by other, closer objects.

If anything, suggesting that this error is related to wireless networks indicates that you have no real idea about what sort of problem this is-

I'm not using a wireless router but what you said basically.

I've already figured out the cause as stated in my original post. The problem is that SE will have to fix their damn game to get rid of the problem because there's nothing the user can do except limit his graphics card to Shader Model v1.4 or less using the registry settings (you can do this with ATI cards, not sure about Nvidia) or use a video card that only supports shader model 1.4, assuming you can even get a Vista/Win7 driver for it, and that's NOT an acceptable solution because it disables Windows Aero and anything else that needs Shader Model 2.0 or higher.

I think the problem might be related to Windows 7 and Windows Vista not having "real" DirectX 8. It's my understanding that in Windows Vista and Windows 7 D3D8.dll is a wrapper. Basically it's emulating DirectX 8 by converting the API calls into DirextX 9

Need more fix to dx9

SE might be able to make some adjustments to the shaders to fix this. It seems that when pixel and vertex shaders higher than v1.4 are available the flickering happens. My first thought was that Vista/Windows 7 was possibly using Shader Model 2.0 instead of 1.4 when wrapping DirectX 8 to DirectX 9.

im having a similar issue kinda. Textures on my weapons (mainly Axes/Ga's) swirl together. on certain Hume hair there is like flashing bald patches. On a cockatrice kinda same thing. I get different color spots on the floor depending on what zone im in (Abyss - Ule Purple/Turquoise) (Abyss - Altepa Yellow/black) and earlier my screen changed to like a brick wall.
