It's important that SE updates old events, this much is obvious. They can't release brand new content fast enough to keep up with player needs. Revamping existing content to be relevant is the best way to go other than dropping the whole iLVL thing all together. This is why the battlefield update makes me think the team is headed in the right direction.
Add a system for augmenting gear with points similar to trial of the magians and airlixers mixed together in conjunction with the newer difficulty versions of BCNM/KSNMs, and two different "point systems."
The portion like Magian Trials is used to increase the item level (iLVL) of gear. By putting a trial on a piece of gear and opening treasure caskets in KSNM battles you obtain points on all trials equipped at the time of opening. The points scale based on the selected difficulty of the battlefield instance and number of pieces equipped on a character at once.
Example of points and upgrades:
Augmenting a Chaos Burgeonet +1 requires 100 points to augment to Chaos Burgeonet +2.
Highest Difficulty KSNM30 gives 5 points for completion when you open the treasure coffer.

Now people are busy updating old gear and it creates a new market for seals of all types, possibly even leading to people partying more in older areas and lower levels to farm seals more effectively.
The points being given to everyone in the party rewards people for teaming up.
The Orb Shards dropping from the chest rewards people for farming their own seals. (Your Orb Your Drop rules are very common)
This could be a way to breathe new life into old JSE and your revamped events while encouraging people to fight in areas besides Adoulin and Abyssea.
