Probably because you mentioned PS2. I doubt many people even touch that console for this game still, let alone play it, since outside of JP no one on PS2 has Adoulin access. My advice, give up playing FFXI on PS2, play on PC. Xbox is ok but PC is infinitely better in my opinion, especially if you use 'that which can not be named'.

I agree whole heartedly with Demonjustin on this one, PC is the best option because just about will run the game at this point after a slight tweak of the render distance and maybe turning some things off like effects. All in all, it's just easier on yourself to use a PC/Laptop.
This is a known router problem. Make sure the following ports are open on your router's firewall: TCP 25, 80, 110, 443 or 50000 - 65535 , UDP 50000 - 65535
If you are at all serious about coming back you need to get the PC or xbox version unless you would be content for a time on PS2 while you play catch up. But in current times and in the future your progress will come to an end until you upgrade to a better system.

Wasn't there an issue wherein the updates post-abyssea were going to be bigger than the PS2's HDD space? I'm sure that there was a huge thread about it on the JP side of things where they were warned to go and get a larger HDD for their PS2s.
On top of that, was the latest expansion even available for PS2 in the english version?
This isn't something that's fix easy often you have to reinstall.
