Let me be sentimental about it for a moment.
A Galka just beating the crap out of everything with his fists. Who wouldn't want that? ;)

Yep. Finally got the darn thing to 90 a few days ago, after letting it rot for a while vs. other jobs...

First job I started, first job to 75, then first to 90. Ah the memories... damn thing has so much gear my mog sack isn't big enough for it T_T
Monk is a damn great job now in abyssea. Always was an awesome job. Throw down that brown and pack the Black!(belt)

Easy for you to say... when you're left high-and-dry to solo every piece of your black belt it only becomes an infuriating and depressing chore. Especially now that everyone and their mothers are leveling it just for the sake of abyssea, their linkshells go and control the NM's in full-force just to give everyone, even those without monk job, a black belt for giggles...

Monk has always been my main. I remember the days of "lolmnk" because we didn't do big burst damage from weaponskills and didn't look as cool as DRKs.

Monk was my first job and has always been my main. I didn't get much of a chance to use it through 4 years of endgame and was more useful on my other jobs (BLM, PLD, SAM, BRD) but it was still my main job and I used it whenever I could. It was great to come back after not playing for a while, to see MNK was finally useful again :)

I entered the world of Vana'diel as a monk, and haven't looked back since. It took me a little over 3 years before I level a second job to 75, and that was only because i had the Usukane to put it in.

I would say most of the monks reading this post, the ones who leveled monk as there first job, had just as bad, and probably a little worse getting our belts back in day, trying to compete against every single HNM LS.

Monk is (and will always be) my main. My 1st job to 75lvl, even though when I made the character I had intended for Dragoon to be my main. By the time I had lvl'd monk to 30lvl to start unlocking all the advanced jobs, I was so in love with it I couldn't stop playing it. It took me 3 years (from NA release) to reach 75lvl. I remember finding other things to do while LFP, and having dry spells that could last up to 4 months at a time. Once the fellow NPC's were added, I at least had a "buddy" with me while LFP. :p
And after almost 8 years of playing this game (and lvl'ing other jobs to cap), you can see below how far Dragoon has actually made it. Lol
Oh, and I still only have the egg for my black belt. But, the new LS that I joined may start doing some KS99's so I can get my last 2 items.

Galka monks are indeed awesome, but Galka mage is lots of fun ;P (Monk is one of the melee jobs I might fully level on Cuddleslave) Monk was gonna be my first job when I first played but so called friend back then pretty much made me not play it :( my war will forever be 51 if I had started mnk like I wanted it would have been my first 75 job before drg & drk lol. Since I'm gonna put my 47 pld on hiatus I think I will go work on my mnk on Tohi

I just hit 90 on my Monk yesterday morning, and it has been my main job for the duration of my FFXI career. I feel folks' pain about the black belt stuff -- I have none of the items needed for it either. I manage to do okay with the gear I have for the most part though. +19% haste ain't that bad! And who doesn't love Tarutaru backflips when we do the Asuran Fists Weapon skill? :D

I don't know about you, but most SAMs I know/knew were bandwagon SAMs throughout ToAU, now they're all bandwagon MNKs.

lol, pretty much.
I got my first black belt item about 4 years ago (tongue) and probably would have gotten the other two had I not quit for 3 years. I'll probably need to set up a KS99 run soon.

Nothing has changes, we're still competing against HNM LS's for it.

Even if the nms are camped to hell . you have to remember ksnm 99's!!! they have a great drop rate on those items. Dont forget about ksnm 99's. fafnir is easy. can probably do it with 1 party @ 90 now. Behemoth and turtle are always easy. If you dont do this . use <stnpc> for your claiming macro .. whatever it may be voke, chi blast etc.. if your in range you still have a great chance to get claim. If someone has a pet job u have an even faster chance if they have the pet out.

I started a Monk back during the 360 beta test, got frozen around 40 because I couldn't get my darn Okote to drop (1/23), so went to RDM, then stonewalled at 70 because Maat kept handing me my derriere. Dancer became my favorite when Wings came out (Beat Laila 1/3), but as soon as I hit DNC75, I came back home to Monk, and now my 3 favorite jobs are Dancer, Monk and Scholar.
As for Black Belt, I didn't get mine till about a year ago (Got Tongue/Beard within a month of each other, but then the LS I was on collapsed and I was stuck duoing/trioing Adamantoise for months, then lucked out when some friends gathered and we snagged Aspi.

Monk is my first and only 90... I just get too bored on other jobs lol.
PUP might eventually make it to 90 soon though, and since nobody has corsair on my server, I might decide to level that a little more until the abyssea monks die out.
But damn, I remember the day, back when warrior was THE tank, I used to get told off for taking hate.... Oh the good old days :)

mnk was my second job (blm being the first)
had to solo most of the times since noone invited mnks for bird camps in TOAU-areas.
Did one good thing though: i know how to play my job solo and in parties.
but still so many ppl going for mnk and wondering: "hey, MNK is a good DD?"
always was, always will be i just wish i would have started earlier to do some mnk burning on Skelletons.

Don't believe this or you'll find yourself to be one very frustrated MNK if you do decide to go the KSNM route. That said, I wouldn't let that stop me... a small chance is better than no chance.

I'm interested in leveling monk (im genuinely interested in the job xD). So this is more of a question to those who were monks first before any other job, 'How has Monk grown over the years?" atleast from what you've noticed (if that question made no sense tell me and ill come up with it in another way)

LOL. Just do a shout for KS99 you'd be surprise how many people will join. It takes longer to enter and buff up than to kill faf and turtle. 7-8 BLM or less if they are good and know how to follow directions. Then you could always offer to buy off ppl who just wanna sell on their orb and have those ppl come.

M O N K R U L E S!!!!!
MNK (as everyone has already alluded to) is an amazing job, has and always will be. I started this game back on the PS2 version and MNK was my first 75 back in 2003. It is still a huge favorite of mine. My guard was sitting at 276 with gear and merits at the original Lvl 75 Cap (that's when you know you're a MNK fan if you take the effort to level Guard, any true MNK will agree with me lol!)

Basically CHIIBI the MNK job has progressed a ton since original release. The added jobs that are /sub options for MNK has made it even more potent and versatile. It's really hard to begin describing the hardships MNK first experienced upon the release because you really would have just had to be there when it started out, which I'm sure most MNK's will agree with as well lol. You should just know though, MNK kicks some serious tail and if you haven't leveled it, DO IT UP! :)

Monk was also my first Job Class I used when I began playing this game last January. Being able to land two regular attacks per turn is nice and I enjoy using Hundred Fists whenever it's necessary. I plan on making Monk my first 75+ Job soon.
