View Full Version : What do I do when my security token runs out of batteries if phone support is gone?

I remember reading phone support for FFXI is over, so what do I do when my security token runs out of batteries if phone support is gone and I'm completely locked out of my account? Is there any warning before it runs out of batteries?
Also, what if it's suddenly lost or broken? How can I reach SE?

I recommend contacting via SE contact. You can contact them throughout the week during business hours. (Beware of Jordan G and Jennifer A though, terrible SE agents)
I didn't go through the phone when mine died, I used shady tactics to get into online chat support. See, you can't buy a new token before yours dies. When yours does die, you can't log into your SE account to purchase a new damn token(lololololololol) SO, you have to go to the support area and toy around with the unrelated options of your problem until one of them gives you the option of 'chat support' to tell them that A)your token is dead B)you need a new one C)You can't buy a new one until you delink your old one and for them to help with that because of D)YOU CAN'T FRICKIN GET A DIGIT CODE OUT OF A DEAD TOKEN TO BE ABLE TO DEACTIVATE IT lololololololol
It's really complete and utter BS to have to put up with, when there should be a big fat 'chat support: chat with us live now!' logo somewhere on their web page as most businesses do these days so it's very easy for people to contact you. This company does not want you to contact them. Ever.
EVERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.
All the respect and love in the world for the support employees and GMs that have ever helped me. But their boss or bosses, whatever, just do not want them to do their jobs for some reason.

You can log into FFXI without the token by turning off the one-time password requirement in your settings in the Playonline Viewer. If trying to get a new token is difficult and you have a mobile device you can get a software token. The software token will automatically overwrite an existing regular token so there's no need to worry about being unable to deactivate the original.

That doesn't work as the token has to be removed from your account before you can even login, you get an incorrect one time password error until its removed.

Not true. Mine went missing. I just turned off one-time password in POL and have been able to play every since. Haven't picked up a software token yet but I'm thinking about it since lack of token does lock me out of a couple of things when I'm doing something on my account on Squeenix site. I can still update payment info amongst other things so it's not a massive hinderance.

There is this for 'lost' tokens:

While I agree that the Support Centre/Center definitely isn't as user-friendly as it should, and it requires quite a lot of clicking around indeed, I don't think it's that difficult to find what you speak of. Then again, I've gained quite a bit of experience of the site by simply strolling about there a lot...
Here's one way to do it (using the EU Support Centre in the example):

FINAL FANTASY XI
Contact (https://support.eu.square-enix.com/contact.php?id=455&la=2)

But yeah, it is quite horrible in general, and I've found quite a bit of erroneous information there, or/and articles simply being horrible and bad in wording. I did get them to improve at least some of it. ^^;
Many articles are also unnecessarily inconsistent amongst them regions, as can be seen in the links I mentioned in the beginning of this post (the examples provided are not that bad, as they basically are saying the same thing, but anyblue!).

I have no idea what has transpired in your case, but I do think it is as Mnejing said. I actually tested it very recently (just before typing out this post) to make sure it hasn't changed.

The tokens are supposed to have a low battery warning icon to warn you that they are getting low. It is at this point that you are supposed to turn your token off so that you can still log into the game, while you order a new one.

doesn't it have an lcd display... wouldnt it seem obvious the battery is dieng? I'm not trying to argue just wondering if there are clear signs that it is indeed dieing.

The Terms of Use (http://support.eu.square-enix.com/rule.php?id=455&la=2&tag=sqextoken) heavily imply that there's a low battery indicator (and there's more than enough room for one to the right of the last digit displayed). Regardless, the token is effectively a digital watch, one which doesn't even have its display on all the time; the batter will last for years.

lcd display
I'm being pedantic, I know, but this bugs me.
LCD Display = Liquid Crystal Display Display.

when my token broke I just turned off the one time password requirement in POL and it let me log in, if I'm remembering right. I never had to call anyone.

Just turning it off seems like such a bad idea.

Without the token, you can't log in to the Square Enix Account Management System (https://secure.square-enix.com/account/app/svc/login?cont=account) make changes to your account. This is bad. VERY bad. Also FFXIV has no bypass.
BTW what's the point of having a token if a person can just disable it? I mean other people could gain access to your characters if they knew your personal info (passwords). They would just uncheck the One-Time password option and have instant access.

Put it in the freezer D:
No I'm kidding don't do that =p
Can't someone at a hardware store change the battery for you? D:

Can't someone at a hardware store change the battery for you? D:I actually tried to change the battery on my dead one, just to see how it went. I couldn't get the case open without trashing the device. Also, pretty sure I've read about how it wouldn't work because of how the thing is set up at the factory, so like simply changing the battery(after you've trashed the case getting it opened)isn't going to suddenly give you a good as new token that'll work for several more years. When it dies, that's it.
Also yeah if you do the smartphone thing, use that. Although I don't know if it's going to work for two + accounts. I don't know how smartphones work for it, but I will soon.

No one can simply uncheck the one time password check box and suddenly get access. That would make the point of tokens, well, pointless.
When someone tries to log you in without a 6 digit code, you will get kicked offline because the login process checks your POL login data first, however the person that did the kicking will not be able to log in fully because the SE account login data won't let them through without the 6 digit code. Or so I hear.

Too bad my Nokia 5140i doesn't quite support it. ^^;

Yeah, one of the Knowledge Base articles I mentioned earlier says the following:
“Please do not exchange the token battery as doing so will erase the data, and the token can no longer be used.”

I think that might have been what Laraul was saying, too. D:

Don't feel bad. My Lumia doesn't support it either. Come on Square, How hard could it possibly be to make a windows phone version?

You have to cancel the old one first. I really don't understand why you can't buy these ahead of time. I actually started a new account and then ordered one on that account but never linked it. It doubled the price, but at least I was able to swap out the old one without having to go without for the 6 weeks it took to deliver.

Yeah, I haven't tried ubuntu phone yet. I'll give it a shot maybe when they make a higher end device. The current ones are sorta aimed at third world countries.
Honestly though, this is the only app I have wanted that wasn't available since I got the phone. It really has been an insanely better experience than my Android, Iphone and blackberry phones (I run the IT department, I get all the toys :P).

This is the most simple way , Just call the support on FF14, since the tokens work on that game , and they will help you on ff11 just act lost. And they actually been ten times better, then the customer service on ff11 every been , since there trying to save there company reputation and working on getting the hardcore pc mmo crowd in the us and eu.
