Final Fantasy XIV now has a firm date for its PlayStation 3 release, and a future release for the PlayStation 4 has been announced at E3. This is all just in time Final Fantasy XI to essentially lose support on the PS2 in North America.

So I have to ask: Is there any hope of XI piggy-backing onto these platforms in the wake of XIV? I'm not going to ask for a miracle like an engine overhaul or some such, but it would be nice if something like a compilation of the original PS2 release was made available for download and play through the PlayStation Network. It would be nice to be able to play both games on the same console, especially if it was done in such a way that it allowed voice chat between the players of the different games, enabling everyone to stay in touch.

The game is already playable on backwards compatible PS3s. Outside of that there is no hope.

goood question indeed. Maybe the legacy download plans for the PS4 may already potentially support FFXI on the PS4, who knows. IDK if I'd hold my breath for it though with the PS3. They'd have to either build a new wrapper just for FFXI on PS3, or they could try pushing Sony to put the emulation software out there again (after they debugged it more). The former might be a nightmare to pull off with newer people unfamiliar with XI's legacy spaghetti code, and the latter would open up access to a host of other PS2 games on the platform, which could lead to more support issues that Sony won't want to wrangle with.

Best possibility probably is with the PS4, considering it is more or less a PC at it's core--lends itself to a lot more emulation potential there.

So, After playing FF14 for 48 hours, I would never touch this game again after 27th of august.
Sorry I had to, Its just amazing.

Why not try FF14?

It would be cool if this could go to the PS3 , but i believe microsoft and square got a contract in place that prevents this game coming out to the ps3. Since this is the only xbox360 game that allows cross platform play with pc,ps2 and xbox360 users and can play on a xbox silver account.

Now maybe they can emulate it on the PS4 , but i am not familar with there contract i just remember reading was like a 10 year contract exlusive on next gen console. For ff11.

Also ff14 is amazing anyways now , for the ps3 and the videos from there E3 booth of it running maxed setting on PS4 just crazy. should give that a try.

Right on, I played before Yoshida took over, and up until they shut the servers down. It was fun seeing the game change and get better, and after thrashing my way through La Noscea this weekend, even thinking about trying to start doing anything in XI seems like a chore.

Given they can't even fix the game to run right on PS2 nowdays, good riddance.

You won't be seeing any ports to consoles, not worth their time or investment when they have a competing MMO on the same platforms, even though it's crap and condensed compared to every other MMOs.

Since SoA made everything I'd done up to that point useless, it's clearly time to look to FfXIV. I'll be getting the PS4 and likely will make a switch then, if I can bring myself to play another MMO. But I think a 6 month break might help get me interested again.

Or...you could spend 5 minutes in 14 and be hooked like the rest of us.

There is more depth to FFXIV's levelling quests from 1 to 10 than SoA storyline..

It's not so much a contract, but moreso the difficulty in porting it to the PS3. Back then Tanaka said, "instead of reworking XI to be ported to ps3, we'd rather make something new." That something new was XIV.

I think they'd have to do a lot of fundamental changes to the code for it to be able to be played on ps3/4..but with the announcement of PS4 being able to play old games, this might be an option...though it won't look as nifty ><

Why not just have a dynamic theme for PS3, lots of character models standing in Jueno or Adoulin with a scrolling chatbox with shouts like, "Plasm farm PLD R/E heavy DD R/E/D/M can I have it?" You get the same thing that XI offers now, without the monthly subscription.

I would hope the starting bit of a new MMO would tease you with a grand adventure, before petering off once the actual grind of the game sets in 30 levels later, versus an MMO 11 years into its life span.

The story is lacking in SoA, but at least they gave us a fair amount of stuff to grind in it to tide us over, unlike say, WoTG's first three years.

Trouble is, Why release an expansion that wont be complete for possibly 1~3 more years (If we go the road of Wings of the goddess), Yes there is some content to grind through, but then what. You got a delve weapon? then the mega bosses for better weapon? then what.
This system of progression isn't great, and people that don't catch the mad rush to complete the content always get left behind with little assistance from people that have it done and have the gear to make things much easier.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if down the road, we could apply atmas in any zone, hell it would be a lot more fun if we could! While that wont be enough lets add Brews for any area, buy it with Bayld. I don't care to continue my adventures in adoulin, or vana'diel for that matter.

It's all points based content, so even if you have everything, you can still get your bayld/plasm up to prepare you for future content as it gets released.

The original developers for FF11 team went over to 14? Videos on YouTube look amazing, too bad the graphics card on my PC not good enough to handle it, gonna have to buy a new one or wait for the PS3 release. Wonder how much of the FFXI community is going to flock over?

All I know is from the usa side is ff14 is about to blow up as a mainstream game for the ps3, For all the old school gamers that enjoyed ff11 and games in general. With the fact microsoft gave all us hardcore gamers the finger. So alot of us are dusting off are ps3 and working on getting into the beta to find out if worth buying a ps3 and ps4 for ff14 for those have not bought the ps3. Since it time to get off the BRO games,, out of the way nowdays and have are girlfriends and wives play a game with us again and enjoy the game with out the BRO's acting there ways.

I expect Destiny and FFXIV will have a similar relationship to PSU & FFXI did as the only real console MMOs people played on Xbox 360, and now its PS3/4s turn. Being on PC and playing together is a great bonus which FFXI had and I assume FFXIV will have as well, all in all marking it up to be great.

Lol the more videos I see of FF14 is convincing me to switch over. Obviously better graphics but just watching BLM alone, spell graphics look way too cool. One video shows a blackmage with over 3.4K mp.... MP refreshes pretty fast and this guy is playing solo...

So many things we have been begging the devs to fix, seems like they got it right in 14.

Again I'm wondering how much of the FF11 fans are going to flock over?

It's called number inflation, and it's one of the things I enjoy XI not having, since everything is within respectable number counts regardless of whether or not you're lvl20, or 99.

Unlike other MMOs where your HP goes into the tens of thousands just because.....

Game doesn't have "Sub" jobs though. If its one thing I hate with seekers content, its being on WHM and having to bring mp pots and /rdm just to try keep up with the massive damage dealt to players, 1~2k mp isn't enough anymore.

Not with competent BRDs and some good gear. I have been WHM in Delve a few times with no MP problems at all and no MP items simply because the BRD kept Ballads on me as well as +2 Legs. Even if you are doing some extreme curing you have a COR to ask for the Refresh Roll as well, harder to setup to get, but still, more MP. The only time I have ever had problems really is when I had a very stupid DRK who insisted every time he got raised and unweakened it was a great idea to use Berserk, Last Resort, Diaboloic Eye, and Soul Eater, all at once, then WS a mob. This was a problem because almost every time he did it he took instant hate, Soul Eater killed off his HP quite a bit, and a single TP from the mob took him out.

How exactly did they give us the finger? Just curious, because I had been under the impression that a windows PC was still the best gaming rig that money could buy.

You still need to level other classes in XIV just to slot in useful skills from them into your main.

You shouldn't be having MP problems on most content anyhow, assuming typical idle refresh set, a refresher of some sort, and not spamming Cure5/6 outside Abyssea.
