View Full Version : Split Light Armor between Ranged and Melee jobs

The dev team seems to be falling in love with the whole "heavy/light/mage" gearing paradigm, but it's getting to be an issue when we're offered a single piece of REX armor that can be only one of multiple chosen paths. Heavy jobs and mage jobs generally benefit from the same stats but the light jobs are pretty clearly split between MNK THF NIN BLU PUP DNC RUN and RNG COR. Please consider either removing the rare tags on these armors so that we can have different sets for different jobs or consider coming up with a fourth category of ranged armor that can be worn by RNG COR, and possibly THF SAM and NIN.
Alternatively, you can edit light armor sets so that they give both ranged and melee stats no matter what path you choose. The only job that would benefit significantly from this is COR, and it's not enough to create any sort of imbalance.
Somewhat related, it'd be nice if you would add hybrid jobs onto multiple sets, such as BLU, COR, NIN and RUN onto mage sets and RDM onto light armor sets.

I vote BRD to be included in the light armor sets since they can also equip some of the best daggers in all of FFXI.

Many of the jobs in FFXI benefit from having as many options as possible outside of the cloth/leather/metal paradigm of RPG pants-wearing.

I agree, especially when you have this...

Ranger and Corsair are the only jobs listed that would get any use out of these; maybe Ninja if shuriken wasn't so scarce/expensive and throwing didn't suck so much :p
All the other jobs get nothing from that piece other then defense and minus enmity...
I'm sorry that's just being lazy, instead of design a fourth set they shove 9 jobs on one set where most of the jobs will get little to no use out of some of the pieces
Kinda an odd place to repost, but RUN might have a better chance as a tank if they had access to heavier armor, such as chainmail-grade armors. Not sure if Ogier's is chainmail, but it would be nice for RUN to get as a special case.
RUN is basically RDM with a bigger sword and 1/16th the spells...with Flash.

Ogier's is not Chainmail-class, it's Heavy in their new-ish gear system. After VW they've simplified the way gear is distributed through a simpler Heavy/Light/Mage system. In some ways I kinda prefer the older way of them having the lore tied to what armors you could wear, but I guess that isn't very conducive to good gameplay. (IE Ninjas could wear Chainmail, but not Scale Mail because the latter is too noisy)
If they were still using the old gear system something that looked like Ogier's would probably only be accesible to WAR PLD DRK. DRG was never really much of a heavy armor wearer (It stuck to scale mail mostly), SAM always wore Eastern Armors and BST usually wore Banded Mail/Chainmail at the heaviest.
I vote BRD to be included in the light armor sets since they can also equip some of the best daggers in all of FFXI.
Yeah, this too. Probably some other jobs that slip my mind on where overlap should be, but the basic idea is that if they want to have like 15 different hybrid classes in the game they should really allow them to actually wear more than one type of armor.
If you wanted me to be honest I'd rather they drop this whole Heavy/Light/Mage gearing paradigm while they're ahead because it really makes gearing a lot less interesting. You'll just end up with having 22 jobs being shoehorned into one of 3 categories of armor outside of JSE, and that's no fun.

Flip side being rangers get jack out of all the other pieces. Even with augments most are going to be outclassed or matched by AF3 or Relic+2. Seriously, I haven't really upgraded anything on ranger since I got my AF3+2/Relic +2 because SE keeps shoving them on hybrid gear which end up being side grades at best. Why waste so much time for a piece that is nowhere near optimal for the job and maybe 1% better at best? Every update I check the gear lists and sigh again because there's usually nothing that really jumps out for ranger, while melee gear keeps getting better and better.
At least we have those gloves and the Nahtirah Trousers this update...

Guys there are only 3 jobs in this game. That's why there are only 3 sets of armor. Don't you see? That's clearly the answer.

I have noticed this also, usually these set's seem to have a single piece that works for Ranged attacks while all the rest have nothing or about nothing to help ranged.

this, absolutely this. run's physical def comes from stoneskin/phalanx, not because we want it to, but because that's about all we have. Unless our JSE turns out to be awesome all the way through 99 we are going to keep being not so durable punching bags, not good for a designed tank...
I could understand the lighter armor if we are supposed to EVA tank, but our stats don't really bear that out, parry just procs so little as to be unreliable at best, and with very little enmity generating tools we really need to gear for damage to try to hold hate, thus -pdt or + eva isn't really our best option.

This is a misguided mindset. It's basically "Well, we're screwed before, so you're screwed now, it works out." It doesn't. Multiple pieces of manibozho and tharaundaut are worthless for many classes due to being VERY range heavy. Which is fine, there need to be piece of gear with those stats, but there also needs to be stuff out there for each slot for the light armored melees as well, cause they don't have any other choices. Still rockin' Brego just because none of the Adoulin junk is worth a darn due to all the shooty bits randomly thrown in.

That absolutely was not the point of my post. I have a 99 DNC as well and I agree with the OP that they need to make separate sets for light melee/ranged. However, I disagree with the Manibozho and Tharaundaut being ranged heavy outside of the M. gloves and the T. legs (although there are the odd mage stats tossed on a couple pieces for BLU)
The point, again, is not melee should get screwed, but SE should be making gear that is useful for the jobs that can equip it, and not take the lazy route by shoving as many jobs onto one set as possible. Particularly when the gear can be purchased with points (since you can't use loot table clutter as an argument against it), there is no reason why pieces should have useless stats for the jobs that can equip them.
They don't necessarily have to be 100% optimal, they just have to be usable. (i.e. no R.Att/R.Acc/Snapshot on melee gear or Haste/DA/Att/Acc on ranged gear)

They could make the ranged attacks not suck so much for the jobs on the equipment. If you don't have /RNG or /COR. I suppose that's beyond a dream at this point though. <sarcasm> I mean, they have to know that THF's aren't equipping Aliyat Chakrams because of it's damage stat and our crazy over-powered throwing skill. </sarcasm>
