View Full Version : I know SE (and everyone else pretty much) doesn't care about Ballista but....

scaling of player damage may need to be adjusted for uncapped PvP, because power of gear as been increasing drastically while player HP, defenses and resistance have not.
One thing that would help this a lot is revealing an actual item level (something the dev team mentioned a lot in regards to newer items) and actually scaling the newer gear down to "level 99" if their effective level is higher.
I don't think I want to be hit by a weapon skill from the delve boss polearm. :p
(PSSssst... please, please, please do SOMETHING to improve ballista. Even something really small like making the license quest optional and changing the schedule would help a LOT.)
I know most people don't care about this and I'm sure people will tell me "screw you, it would divert resources from <insert not ballista content here>." This is more of a dream / wish than an actual expectation.

It would be nice if SE invested more in PVP in XI. Maybe adding something like points that could be spent on things that help in other areas of the game.

Thank you for making this thread!!! I've always felt that SE needs to do something to make events like Ballista and garrison more appealing to do. I think it would be interesting now to do a no lv cap match with Geo at least. Do you put a defensive loupan at your goal or an offensive one? Same goes for the Geomancer theirselves or where they go or run around with. Always enjoyed doing the matches you could set up your self getting dead by the Blus on the other team.

They had PvP in mind when they put out TouA but only half of that content was ever finished. It's the same thing with the play as a monster that hasn't come out yet for SoA. I really hope it does cause it's fun and can be a stress release doing PvP in this game with friends. Nothing is more funny than seeing a taru whm layout your DD butt without building up a sweat.

I'm hoping that since Monstrosity is essentially a PvP activity, that they include some adjustments for Ballista at that time, ubt I'm not holding my breath. =\

In response to your topic. You're correct. Most people just don't care. Lot's of shades that allow the development to move in the wrong direction. Most people don't even stand up and say anything about it. The ones that do are always shot down by sycophants. These people always press like buttons with little understanding of whats really being said. The only time action is taken is when it pisses off enough hardcore players then maybe just a tiny glimmer, of acknowledgement is made from the man behind the curtain.
Until the point of revolt that man behind the curtain is given a free pass. Why, People just don't care! I don't play PVP. Most of the players I know look at it as a joke that doesn't represent a players skill. Since most people don't seem to care then it'll be hard for you to garner support for your suggestion.
Best of luck getting developers to listen because it needs development time and resources. This is something they are in short supply of atm. I'd say the simple way to balance the system is to a add gear restriction option or something. This way they wouldn't have to rebalanced the whole system.

All that is needed is for higher content level items to be treated as if they were higher level while participating. Then they get scaled down like gear gets scaled down with level sync.
Ballista isn't about being the best or proving your skill, it's about being a fun activity, a sidegame, like blitzball in FFX, the card games in other games, etc.
Of course, if it gave any kind of tangible reward, even if it wasn't something especially useful, you'd suddenly see a lot more people caring. People simply don't do things in this game unless there is a reward tied to them. But I'm not even asking for that. I'm asking for them to spend 5 minutes thinking about it now, since they obviously failed to take it into consideration when they added all this stuff. Ballista wasn't terribly broken at 75, it got slightly messed up as the cap went to 99, but wasn't a real big deal. But with this new expansion, everything has been thrown out of whack- not even just ballista, but lots of other things that they didn't change when adding the new content or at least factor in when designing the new stuff.
//wrists - it wouldn't have to be extra work now if someone at SE simply spoke up and said "we need to make sure we don't break X and Y when we add Z."
That's what's aggrivating to me, and probably most people around here, more than anything else- they rarely seem to consider the fringe reprecussions of the changes they make.

People are supposed to play for fun but given the pressed reward system no one gives a crap about the non-rewarding or outclassed stuff anymore. Bottom line: most people who are still on this game aren't normal every days casual players. The average player is in it for personal gain. Without older content being made equally rewarding its left in the dust. Who cares about busting their arses for inferior gear even if it can be updated with decent stats? People don't care about PVP because it's not popular or rewarding.
If there where rewards for older content that benefited newer content then people wouldn't be ignoring older content. Unfortunitly, the developers have tunnel vision when it comes to new content. When new content is added old content isn't improved. If it does get improvement it's never up to par with new content anyway.
The PVP system is way outdated and to be compatible it'd need more then a slight overhaul with all the balance and gear changes.

In many games, even WoW on a non-full PVP server, even the most hardcore PvErs often play PvP to fill time when they've conquered the latest content and are waiting for something new to come out (as an example). This is a healthy usage of a PvP system and the primary reason for it to exist (in my opinion). FFXIV will be doing something like this. PvP is not going to be a main element of the game, but it will be relevant and participation will have some fringe benefits (e.g. nothing that would force you to do it, but still something that would generate interest). Thus, assuming the game takes off at all, I expect to see people playing it, especially in proximity to a new patch.
FFXI's PvP though has lost so much relevance that this doesn't happen (aside from there being too many overly tedious things to do that you could be doing instead to make progress). If they just made small updates along the way, it wouldn't have had to have gotten to this point. Even though I'm mainly a PvE player, PvP activities often keep me playing a game when I might otherwise end up playing something else.

You do get things to wear from Ballista though. Most were hats that helped you in ballista and looked like night caps. I remember the last tournament SE put on and how that made a surge of people wanting to play. Braging rights that people could kick the butts of all the other servers. We slave away fighting against things that go by a script but never really get a chance to show how good one is or isn't against something that doesn't have a script. Raise your hand if you know what provoke does to an actual player.
If SE does do something to spruce up ballista and other older quick but fun mini events they will need to make them give something that people can use to get other things in the newer content. If not that then gear that's more than a hey look I scored 50 times in a match.

Those don't count. They were awarded as trophies from the Ballista Royale tournament, which was a one-time event.
The only "thing" you actually get from official ballista is titles and chevrons for scoring well and for each job (which I've been trying unsuccessfully to get 5 other people to do one so I can get the GEO title), but these aren't even permanent and expire after a time period. So even the simple recognition you get isn't good enough because it's only temporary.
Like I said though, it's a pipe dream. The producer has made it obvious there's lots of things he'd like to do but SE isn't giving him the resources to make it all happen.

I can't see them inserting anything too valuable into PvP events, especially not something needed for any kind of progression since the game very much isn't about PvP (excluding of course the drama of old that people speak of, as well as competing on claiming NMs).
So things would probably have to be something not overly useful in the grand scheme of things (but lots of fun they could be).
I do hope they will adjust things, and add things related to Ballista just as I'm hoping for them to play around with all the other old content. I haven't even done Ballista nor Brenner, but I always wanted to! I know they can be tons of fun, and shouldn't be left untouched.

Even if it was just gear that said "Conflict: Enhances Something something" I'd be all over that. Outside of ballista, its a trophy, and inside of it, it helps you in some way.
as much as I sometimes resent the hardcore ballista community (which gathered on one server and essentially left the others with no community at all) they have produced some pretty awesome videos showcasing some awesome teamwork. Everyone you ever see in the Diorama is just a couple ppl triyng to 1v1 eachother. FFXI combat was never made for that, and when ballista 'the game' is played as a team game it is so much more deep and exciting. Ballista more than even any PvE activity makes it possible for basically all jobs to contribute in a team setting.

What would fix it is to change "uncap" to 75 cap. That or change the -50 DT in ballista to - 90 or something.

Everyone keeps ignoring Brenner even more than Ballista... and I'm still wondering what the Windurstian 'conflict' game would be.

No, adding a 75 cap is fine, but there should still be a no cap.
Add 75, and remove 30 ~ 50. Nobody is interested in ballista under level 60.
Everyone keeps ignoring Brenner even more than Ballista... and I'm still wondering what the Windurstian 'conflict' game would be. Ballista and Brenner aren't specifically associated with any nation.
Berenner would have gone a lot better if it was straight up capture the flag e.g. only one lamp instead of several.
