first i'll just address the elephant in the room. R/E/M. i get it, my initial reaction was NSFW (http://youtu.be/kJgqc9h2jV4?t=1m32s) to. but i guess i'm willing to see what happens.
Now, something a little more positive, something i think is actually rather important that is being overlooked due to the general flabbergasted-ness of people over the R/E/Ms and the new loot.
Delves loot SYSTEM.
kill nms. nms drop items... but also... killed nms unlock their loot pool for purchase from an npc via plasm. this is the loot system most of us have been wanting for years?
granted nobody has killed a delve boss yet so we don't know if EVERYTHING will be opened for purchase via plasm, but so far so good. we finally have a reward system that requires you be ABLE to kill NMs, but doesn't then rely on a .01% droprate to get you your stuff. (we've always said if we can kill it once we could kill it a thousand times, so why does the random number generator insist we kill it infinity times?)
it seems like just about the best loot system we've had? and it makes me hopeful for the future of the game.
This is the FFXI equivalent to catching a shiny Magikarp, it's shiny, but it's still a freaking Magikarp.

I quite enjoy the expansion as an average player i find the ability to challenge myself at my own pace for rewards is fantastic. I also look forward to monstrosity and the Mog island thing.
Edit: they also changed my timepieces music which was awesome!
I like RUN, I've wanted an FFXI Mystic Knight for years, wish they'd make it take hits better.
I'm about this|close to posting something that'll get my character banned, but Kojo's crybaby a$$ isn't worth that effort.
Anyway, I've posted a positive in my own thread about the significant modifications in the merit Weapon Skills, which sounds like something worth getting into for those who play various jobs and want to try as many of these as possible.
Of all the people complaining, you come to this rageless thread...to pick me? I'm honored.

As a person who mains only one to two jobs (Drg the majority, Whm for the rest and even then somewhat) I never really bothered with the merit ws's until now, Stardiver just never really appealed to me, but since I'm finally halfway through stage 3 on Gungnir I'm wanting to invest in getting stardiver maxed out I'm glad I get to use it on the first merit instead of 3-4 later.
Is it just me or did they say pretty much nothing about the Deliver NPCs added outside the Mog House on Adoulin?

An issue wherein the additional delivery NPCs are not available even when the emblem is present on the wall of the Courier's Coalition.
I believe they did.
I believe they did.
Oh, I didn't realize they were associated with coalitions. I overlooked it.

Upgrading the emblem adds NPCs that offer delivery services all across the place (There's an NPC in the Scouts' Coalition who says where they are, but he's annoyingly vague). Without the upgrade, Adoulin is marked as having services "Most areas" while everywhere else is not in service. After the upgrade, Adoulin is marked as having service in "All areas", while the outdoor zones have limited service. Which means there's one at each frontier outpost...
I will have to say, the usefulness of this upgrade baffles me. I mean, when have you been out in the field and thought "You know... I really need to send this to a mule, but I kinda don't want to go back to town..."

I could see it if you were farming and KNEW you had 7 items up already. Or if your inventory is just full.

I've had some harsh criticisms for SoA, but I also feel what is good needs to be addressed,
I actually agree, My friend talked me into coming back and right from the start I really like the Delve system, I think it's the most accessible system in XI yet considering the rewards, but at the same time it takes a lot of work and I'm really liking the options the player gets, wither it's to use the Shards on themselves, sell on the AH for 100k, or use to POP a NM they need. Kudos for the well thought out system.
A few more tweaks and additions and this expansion could work out well after all.
at least I have hope now.

I dig the loot system for Delve, too. I think the mix of fighting huge monsters, farming little monsters, and farming items from really little monsters make it the best point system in FFXI right now.
I also like how bold this update is. Like...walking into the mall naked, with a bong in each hand and some camping supplies on your back, and announcing that you're going to start new life next to the giant soft pretzel stand and refusing to put on clothes until you get the pretzel lady's fake-German outfit. There's some real individuality and bravery amidst that naked insanity.

This is halfway to what I wanted for Grounds Tome areas, though more specifically, I wanted a Nomad Moogle, or perhaps some way of spending your merits. Leaving those areas means losing all of your prowesses and resetting exp/tabs/gil.
Leaving SoA areas doesn't have that effect, so it's usefulness is rather limited.

as a guy who beileves strongly in "waste not, want not" I totally have to agree. I was out spamming demon arrows with a buddy working on his Asuran Fists trial. I must have fired off 300, and yet never used up the stack of 60 I came with, gotta love that. then I remembered the 42 quivers I have on a mule, plus 10 in my satchel from leveling crafts and thought, how long until I use all this up?
maybe I'll retask all those recycle merits...
