I've been using the font mentioned in this note (http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxi/threads/7267-May-10-2011-(JST)-Version-Update) since the patch is released, likely for two years. And I suddenly find I'm no longer using the new font but the old, low definition one instead...
I don't remember what I have touched to cause it changed back (to the old font), the thing I want to know is:
What should I do in order to enable the new font again?

Hmmm... maybe I'm still using the new font but something just messed the rendering up...

You can adjust quality of font from within the FFXI Config software from outside of FFXI itself. As for your problem, it appears fine to me. The kerning was never perfect on it, and the first/last letters tend to get a couple pixels shaved off as you see on the lower-left corner of the M in Moogle.
Only other thing I can think of is you were using a widescreen resolution prior, which tends to stretch the font/icons out horizontally.

I'm using 1024x768, it was better back then the patch came out.

The first screenshot was taken 2 years ago, and the second was taken several minutes ago.
There is definitely difference.
(The difference of linkshell color came from different linkshells with similair color, not due to graphic problem)
Guess something broke the alpha channel.

I did a little research and finally found this:
When SE implementing the new larger damage number font, they also removed the transparency of the character name font.
Not sure whether that's intended or an accident.
Hope the dev can see this.

Final guess here:
When they implemented the Hi-Res font, they made it with transparency stroke, and it looked nice for character names.
But since the game uses that font almost everywhere, this change also made some text other than character names a bit difficult to read.
Maybe it is not easy to make the names transparent only and leave other text solid, so they decided to make them all solid to prevent the problem text become difficult to read...
So it seems not an accident.
