Update is stuck

I'm trying to re-install the game because it's been a long time since I've played, and thought I'd give it another try. However, every single time I try to update the game the Playonline viewer gets stuck on 53.dat (14%) and doesn't move past it. It gives me no error and just hangs there.

I have tried everything from DNS Flushs with Winsock resets to using my old CDs to install everything, to the steam install, I've uninstalled and re-installed the game more than 15 times, and restarted my computer after every one. I have tried every tip from every conceivably relevant page on the support site, and hundreds of google searches have yielded nothing remotely useful.

No matter what I try to do FFXI will not update and I could really use some help.

I'm running Windows 7 (with full windows updates). I've tryed the windows vista/7 pol viewer, and I've tried my 2008 box kit (that worked last year) but nothing works.

Please someone help me out.

I'm still trying to get my game to update after 2 days of fussing with settings and things and can find nothing else to do on my end after stumbling over this port forwarding stuff. The situation is immensely frustrating and I really can't take anymore of it.

just to rule it out, have you checked your hard drive for errors (tools section when you right-click and check the properties of your hard drive).

Could have a file spread across a weak sector. There may be tell-tell signs of errors accessing a hard drive or drive not responding in your Windows event logs.

The first thing I did after deleting the first reinstall was a boot sector scan, followed by disk cleanup, just to be sure.
I'm relieved someone has finally taken an interest.

As it stands right now I'm scrubbing the whole install and starting from scratch.

About the only thing off the top of my head is maybe port 53 (DNS) is getting blocked. Think that we get some "heartbeats" form the server on that port...forget exactly. Usually that protocol is blocked for security reasons--it could be getting blocked at your router by default security settings, so it may not get through anyway if you create a rule for it. Could try adding the TCP/UDP port forwarding rules and allow your router to respond to DNS as well to see if that doesn't get things moving again.

Thanks for that tip, I've added it then tested and still nothing. I've even changed the TCP to both and played around with them and again still nothing. It's like FFXI has something against me personally. Though that is absurd.

YIKES! Just got access to my PC and searched the SE folders for that file out of curiosity....351 of them all over the places, ranging from 1KB to roughly 2.5 MB. No telling which is the right one. So much for getting someone to email you a copy of the file.

One thing you could try, if you're up to it, is to download an offline update package from somewhere like the BG forums and then running a file check afterwards to synch everything up after that.

I already tried that earlier (from Tehkrizz), but because they were out of date, so after the file check it said they needed to be repaired and updated and I'm back to square one on that.

There's a thread at BG that has people routinely uploading updated zips. Kohan (http://www.bluegartr.com/threads/99953) put up some from 3/31 that were tested against a fresh install. Don't be fooled by the dates on the posts on the first page. The links in the second post have been updated to the latest uploads, and there are detailed notes/instructions that break out from the Spoiler tags.

I'm pretty sure I figured out what was wrong. But there isn't anything I can do to fix it from home.
Because I have internet provided through an apartment complex, it's routed through the entire building before it gets to my router so I can't open the security port 53. I took it to a friends and it started downloading just fine.
