has there been any upgrading of the graphics?

ok i havent played this game since 2009. im interested in getting back into it and reactivating my main character. but im curious as to have they done any upgrading to the graphics? have they smoothed out edges etc. if i remember it correctly the game was very pixelated and blocky. before i invest money to get the new expansion id like to know about this.

ive looked at screen shots and it indeed appears smoothed over alot with more rounded edges etc. but is that really what i can expect?

The fonts for character and mob names that float over such things were upgraded, as were the linkshell/GM/disconnect-type icons, but that's about it. The way you're describing the game though, it sounds like you either played at very reduced settings on the PC or played the PS2 version.

i orginaly had it on ps2 then got the pc version. i go the expansion up to wings of goddess. i just reinstalled the game and activated an old account that was the wrong one and didnt have any expansions on it just the base XI and it was so blocky and pixelated it made me sick. perhaps that is why? im waiting till the weekdays to see if i can contact them about reactivating my lvl 60 summoner i had back when lvl cap was 75. if there is an improvement ot the pixelation issue then ill prolly hop back in this game for sure. im in the closed beta for XIV and well....ima be playing XI....

Sounds like your resolution settings were just set too low, probably using 512 x 512 background textures or something odd like that.

Remember, there's two settings: backround (3D texure rendering), then foreground (your actual screen resolution). These are set in your FFXI Config tool, or you can set them manually in your registry if you're comfortable with that (FFXI Config has preset values you pick from drop lists--have to edit registry if you want non-standard settings).

You want them to either be both the same, our your background to be 2x your foreground (if your system can run that high and not suffer a frame rate hit in FFXI). Most of the wikis have pages going over the details, here is one:

Background resolution is just 3D resolution. It's not affecting the texture resolution.

ok thanks a ton i didnt know this config tool exsisted and has helped a ton. im so excited to be playing again and it not look like utter crap. oh man i cant wait to get caught up and play with people
