I know how it can be. In a way I understand a lot of racial issues, Its moslty due to things out of our control... People of power determining how everyone see the common man. Sucks :(

That aside, Glad to see you're enjoying the expansion. I'm personally working to build a Skirmish pop set :D, We have 3 Heads, 2 Legs, and Working on Bodies. Really hoping to do it sometime soon. I just got finished reading a lot of the details on it, and wanna try to get a Faithful Torso II or Higher... Its hard work, Spent a good few days Farming in various zones.

Luckily though, With 4 People, It goes by fast and its fun cause we're friends, plus, it doesn't hurt that when fighting Butterflies or such, We can make gil from Twitherym Wings :D

Nice to meet you, murasakishikibu, and welcome! I'm unable to read the Japanese language so I am unaware of what has been going on over there. I suppose in a case like this, ignorance is bliss. ^^;

I grew up with my father in the military so I've traveled a lot and met many many people. I have met some horrifyingly terrible people and I have met some truly exceptionally wonderful people in my life. I am sure I will meet many more before my life's journey is complete. I learned in those years that the only thing that determines what kind of person you are is your heart inside. I will not judge the individual based upon the actions of the many.

Don't be afraid to share your love for FFXI here in these forums with us. I hope you continue to have fun with this game with everyone for many years to come!

heloo, it is morning here.

let me explain about what is actually going on in japan, i mean in the game. and this is only from my point of view, i can not speak on behalf of japanese ppl.
(this is a game comminity, so i am am not goin to talk about some international situation, btw)

in japan, most of the ppl finish college or higher diplomas, they study english for... almost 10 years or even more.
but their xenophobia is much more serious than US ppl prorabbly think. personaly, I am very surprised xenophobis still exsistes even nowadays. we traval around by air, go to anywhere and watch drama mostly from hollywood
,Yet having xenophobia.

japanese ppl's reading ability is kinda high. school doesnt really teach speaking, so they can't do that so much,
but writing and listening is getting better, especially in this 10 years.
so typing EN should not be that hard, but they tend to refuse, as I see frequenetly.

it is not really a "hate" i feel, it is more like.... "fear without reason".
i know those ppl r very rare, but in the game, or in jp forum, i actually see them almost every week.

i understand language is a really huge wall to break down, but before that,
they tend to think "it is impossible for japanese and other ppl to commicate with, caz our culture is too different".
this is an educational failture, including universitie (+Graduate...)

this is a horrible fact. i am in japan for 25 years, and some years in US (only 5 years), so
i can feel that very naturally.

also, this may not really make any sense to US ppl, but almost all JP ppl think "Japanese r all Japanese Blood".
That means they assume parents and families r all japense blood. they dont even wanna accept legal immigrants as a
japanese citizen, nor perminent resident. under the law, Gov will accept it, of corse, but ppl wont.

However, for the last, i wanna say most of japanese players r warm heart, and good ppl....
just very few ... are extremely bad.

ty for reading here, and I will go to Adoulin again ^^

It's intresting that you would post this here because I've recently had the desire to post an open letter in the JP forums because of the xenophobic threads that have been popping up recently.

I just wanted to highlight some differences between JP and EN mentalities and how that affects our perceptions and misunderstandings of our behavior in-game. My Japanese is sort of limited though (I used to live in Osaka, but it's been a while) so I always get intimidated as I start writing the letter.

Although it's sort of funny that a lot of complaints people have in the JP forums (game content-wise) are very similar to the complaints in the EN forums and both forums complain that the devs never listen to them, lol

Welcome to the NA forums :D

It's funny because when SE announced last year that they were going to have regional servers in ffxiv there was a lot of resistance on both sides about it. And before someone corrects me, even tho it's regional "datacenters" and not actual regional servers we all know how its going to end up.

We will see what happens after arr release, it could potentially make matters worse. Or it could just die down completely and be a forgotten subject until someone necro-bumps a thread or two next year

I for one took the time to learn a few phrases in japanese so i could play the game better some people were impressed others were meh. i have known about this xenophobia for awhile.... idk if it's gotten worse or better over the years but i do know it's been there for ever since i started playing the game! IDK sometimes educated people are just as ignorant as ignorant people.. we are all in this together... I however enjoy the voting system. anyways welcome to NA forums

Welcome Murasakishikibu-san

I took the time myself to learn some Japaneses but it is harder for me because I am a bad speller in my own language, English. When I first start to play this game, I was in a English/Japaneses Linkshell. Was fun to be in but there was not that many people in it and did not last that long. I think the main problem (and this is around the world) is that a lot of people see English as an invasion of there culture. That aside, I use to be on Ramuh server but then SE ate it and move me over to Bahamut server. This happen when I took a 3 year break and when I came back I jump over to Asura because there was a lot of hate on my old server and I knew a lot of those people where still playing there. Now that I am at Asura I find that people are a lot more friendly.

it is nice to hear about such cooperative interactions despite the language barriers. definitely, not all of them are rude or racist or xenophobic or w/e but to be honest, i just can't imagine that i could ever have such an interaction, at least on shiva as i don't really know about any other server.

in my personal experience, it is usually all about jp onry shouts and ignoring auto translated tells when it comes to any event you would need communication. some of them even shout with auto translated terms so you can understand what they are doing or jobs they need etc. but then ignore you when you try to get back to them in auto translate. if it is that useless for you to communicate this way, then why are you using it to find only jp people to invite to begin with, right? just imagine shouting half in japanese half in auto translate to find only english speaking players while refusing non-english speakers as soon as you find out they don't speak english or blatantly ignoring japanese players...

anyway, i just wish the language barrier wouldn't be stretched even more by the ignorant as it is already pretty steep in most cases. at least you can keep trying to get in touch with them in one way or another but those whining about too much cultural difference to play together is totally out of help though... we are just playing a freaking game, not living together (even then you would eventually get used to each other).

nice to meet you, hope you have fun in the EN forums. glad you don't have Xenophobia :D, no offense to you, but from what I have read from other places, the Japanese culture is very conforming, so I think that they could be in a cycle where most of them don't like Americans, and that makes them assume that they all should hate on the America, it's great to know that you're being a bigger person and you'll definitely reap rewards from it. For instance if you were on Phoenix just for posting this I'd probably message you in game asking (do you need any help?), but you're on Bahamut :( so I hope you can get everything you need ^^, hit Fusion up sometimes, he did (guess still does) a podcast on Itunes that I actually was on years ago >.>; but he pretty helpful ^^.

History and background can make all the difference. You may not realize it, but you are shaped from the upbringing of your parents, who are shaped from the upbringing of their parents, and so on.

I'll try to be brief and just say there is a large difference between Japanese and American cultures, but in the end, we are all humans. So we have many traits which differ, though to your credit, we also have many traits which are the same.

Thank you for talking about this! It's always interesting to hear about day-to-day culture in other countries. I kind of get the resentment, since you guys are put through a lot of pressure in school to learn our language (with pretty bad academic consequences if you fail) while you know we aren't expected to learn yours. For what it's worth, Americans generally disapprove of other Americans who don't bother even learning basic phrases in the local language when they visit other countries, though most of the time we make fun of it rather than directly criticize it, which might not translate.

Xenophobia is alive and well in America and Europe, so while I've heard Japan is really bad about that you shouldn't feel it's uniquely terrible in your country. I don't know enough about Japan to really compare this, I admit, but in America, there are pretty strong class divisions (money/education/region/etc.) and xenophobia is stigmatized by being associated with lower-class, uneducated people.

This is good in the sense that it discourages stigma since (most) people don't want to be seen as lower class, but it's bad in a way, too: it reinforces the class divisions by saying that poor = stupid and cruel, for one thing, and I don't think wealthy and educated Americans are much less likely to be racist and xenophobic than poor and uneducated ones.

One thing I'll definitely say for America is that we talk about race and cultural difference constantly, and while some people say we talk to much about it, I'm not one of them; I think it's done us a lot of good to constantly be made aware of our bad behavior.

Out of all the posts in this thread, I'm very curious to hear more about this crap.

Aside from cultural differences in cooperative attitude, language barrier, the poor design of auto-translate (pro-tip: it's really unpleasant to use for Japanese language), and some vocal members the JP player base frequently citing foreigners as the source of cheating, botting, and RMT - the truth of any of these concerns is probaby a discussion for a different thread), one should not underestimate the vitriolic capacity of the net uyoku (http://www.debito.org/japantimes041406.html).

Meh. Right-wingers on the internet isn't exactly a new phenomenon or unique to Japan, nor is the fact that a *-chan site is the seedy underbelly of the internet/humanity. About the only reason it would be more visible among Japanese players of FFXI is that everybody else here is on some level aware that they're playing a game not native to their home country/culture.

I never claimed it was a new phenomenon or unique to Japan (although it really does seem like you are underestimating the level of hypernationalism boasted by the net uyoku). It reads like you're trying to pick apart what I said without knowing anything about the situation whatsoever.

You personally didn't, but just about everyone else commenting in this thread seems to be waiting with bated breath to hear about something "new" and "different" from a Japanese player. It's why I interpreted the OP's talk of "too many racists" as "red meat."

(although it really does seem like you are underestimating the level of hypernationalism boasted by the net uyoku).

I don't claim familiarity with commenters on 2chan specifically, but I fail to see how hypernationalists whitewashing school history textbooks in Japan differs all that much from hypernationalists whitewashing school history textbooks in Texas.

More stuff:

It's worse for JP players because they're on the worse end of the cutural deal so it aggravates them more than it does us. They see certain behavior common among EN players as rude, foreign, socially unacceptable whereas JP players don't really have a greater tendency do anything that really grinds EN players' gears. Additionally, auto-translate was designed for the English language and is really frustrating to use in Japanese.

As for the lack of desire to communicate with EN players, I think part of the observed higher tendency toward performance anxiety for Japanese people using English OP mentions this briefly) is due to the structure of Japanese . The language is more rigidly structured and there are fewer ambiguities, so it's much more likely that one can make a mistake in Japanese and completely change the meaning or render a statement incomprehensible (I initially had problems with this when I lived in Japan, use one wrong verb tense and people might correct you, make two mistakes at the same time and blank stares abound) was worse when I went from Osaka to Tokyo because I started mixing dialects up). English is more fluid so when someone makes a grammatical error it's easier to understand what they meant to say because we're used to looking for structural variations. This particular aspect is of no fault to Japanese people, but I think it does play a part in the occasional unwillingness to communicate.

As far as the cheating, botting, RMT etc. this also plays a part in the negative attitude. JP players do tend to be more mindful of the ToS. Someone made a post about the Naakual H2H and players got upset with him for DAT mining, of all things.
