There some reason RUN can't do any of the Sunblade line of Great Sword trials? Part of me feels like it has to be an oversight of some sort, such that RUN is left only able to do the elemental trials.. just seems a bit weird, considering! Has there been any word on any of this at some point I missed?

Sunblade is an elemental weapon? Sorry I don't recognize the name offhand. If its the final weapon of the elemental path then it is probably an oversight.

There's a couple of reasons that come to mind why SE did this:
1) They were lazy and just decided to exclude the job from the whole line instead of just the Emp/WoE paths.
2) They wanted to remain consistent with how the previous weapons where done (how staves exclude a lot of jobs from the Emp/WoE/DA/OAX paths)

No, it's the base form of the OAT/Emp gsword.

...Then why is this question being asked...?
we knew before the jobs came out that they weren't going to get Empyrean weapons... Disallowing them from the entire upper tier of Magian weapons was just the easiest route to doing it.

Because they said they were excluding it from Relics/Emps, they said nothing about the Physical Great Sword path, in all honesty they should be included up to that point.

I'm of the mind set that disallowing them from the base was the easiest route to not having to deal with any guff from the physical route in general -- again, SE is doing R&D for what the new jobs will need and not giving them the physical route was just a decision they made within the realm of limiting potential directions the jobs could go. It's the same reason why I imagine RUN isn't on Mercurial Sword. They didn't want people getting weird ideas with multihit weapons, maybe?
Historically, once a job gets type-cast within a certain roll it is very hard for them to circumvent that role even after updates arrive -- perhaps putting staunch limits on what the jobs had access to is their way of ensuring no one gets ideas beyond what SE has planned long term.
Granted, releasing the jobs complete would have been a more substantial way to solidify the jobs in specific roles, but I'm thinking they honestly are taking into account the noted failings of the jobs within the comments of the community for consideration of how to adjust merits and forthcoming spells and abilities.
