anyone have any clue as to why SE deemd it ok to make a HNM/NPC that can and will kill you but have no way of dmging it in any way?.
this is in ref to the dark rider that is odin. that mean ass has killd me and my pty counless time while being out and about in the mire.

I've only seen him once in my career, and even then it wasn't him that killed us, it was his pet Imp or whatever it was, which we did in fact engage and tried to kill. Key word tried. We were level 62ish at the time.

It's so he can make foot prints for newbies to increase their assault rank. I thought Odin & his pets were passive unless you tried to engage them? I've also never seen him though.. but now I want to lol maybe I'll go looking for him when the servers are up.
PS. Maybe there's some secret to actually fighting him & he drops all his Einherjar gear.. though I doubt it lol.

Thematically I guess. Odin's appearance ties in with the Treasures of Aht Urghan storyline. He doesn't aggro, so if he kills you it's your own fault.

You probably need a special item or use an ability to weaken him. My first guess is that since he has a pet imp he's immune until the pet is killed first.
I know nothing of this monster so don't slam me for posting about it.

Nope. Dark Rider is utterly immune to attacks, and designed to be that way. The Esquire and Bugler he summons will aggro, but Dark Rider doesn't link to either if they're attacked/attack something...though both will link to anyone dumb enough to aggro the Rider.
If you're dumb enough to hit Dark Rider, you gonna get reamed. That's all there is to it. Big Guy With Do Not Touch sign, FFXI's equivalent of "Don't Stand In The Fire".

He doesn't aggro, so if he kills you it's your own fault.
He does agro, casts death on you and it's over. The demon and the imp are easily killed. I've never seen the proof of him being immune to damage but it makes sense. It's impossible to plan anything for this "NPC".

Yes, he's very real. He can kill you. You can't kill him. You can kill his summoned imp and demon, but he's immune.

Think about what Odin is in both game and in mythology... SE obviously just added a way to make Odin invincible and that also ties in with the gameplay. He makes the warhorse print that was mentioned before, used for assault ranks so it's best he isn't killed anyway because if he was kill-able there would be no print for a while and then everyone would complain. Odin, like Bahamut etc, was never meant to be properly killed.
