I was thinking about this and don't have an answer, so ill ask.
Registration codes are not system specific. So if someone plays on PC they could technically order the Xbox ultimate collectors edition, and use that SoA code for their account. Thus they could access SoA content on PC (after the version update info)
If that is true, other then the registration code, what does the PC Digital Download contain? It cant rly be the content itself since its not done being developed yet.

You don't download the expansion data through the update its either on the Xbox 360 disc or in the PC download . The only thing you can get through updates, other the updates :P, is the add ons. Unless I read your question wrong. XD

They would have to, it's two different systems. That's like buying FFXIII on the xBox and expecting to get the PS3 version for free since you plan on playing it on both systems. It doesn't work like that.

i might buy that excuse if it were a one time purchase game. But this is an online game, regardless of system. Ppl have already bought the game, bought all the past expansions, bought all the add ons, and now are buying the new expansion... on top of a monthly subscription. To tell someone they have to spend more money to have access to a DL for something they already bought in another form is kind of insulting. I mean, i only play on one system and even i can see thats insain. I get where they are coming from as a buisness, but still...

According to you, if you buy XIII-2, and all the DLC that goes with it, from Microsoft for the 360, then Sony should give you all the PS3 content for free. Again, it doesn't work like that.
And if your only excuse is that XI is an online game then same could be said about XI for the PS2. You buy the product for a Microsoft system, then expect Sony, a whole different company, to accommodate you for supporting an opposing company.
on top of a monthly subscription.
The monthly subscription already allows you to play the account on multiple consoles, I'm confused as to why you brought that up.
If you want the advantage of playing on multiple platforms then you're going to have to pay. If you don't want to, then pick the platform that you're going to play on most.

I still get why they don't make the PC files available for the FFXI install/expansions on your SE Accounts page for XI.
This is 2013, I don't know of any other MMO that doesn't gladly offer you the client files off their own website, rather than resorting to third-party providers like Steam, Amazon.......your ancient FFXI install discs.

I agree with this! The PC downloads should be available automatically if you have a subscription and your account has access to those expansions. If your not buying a BOXED set then you should really only be paying for the codes. If people are getting a digital download it shouldn't matter if it's free to download because you need a subscription and those expansions unlocked to make them work.
Unless you consider the illegal fake private servers the client has no use without the expansion codes and subscription. So why does it require a purchase to download it off a 3rd party site? Saving money maybe?
As for the fake servers I doubt even 0.001 percent of the population even cares about those enough to misuse the clients. It's not like those garbage private servers would compare to the massively supported free-to-play online games already out there. Most people would easily choose the free-to-play game woulds backed by the big companies over private garbage like that anyway. So if that's your reason for not making a download spot it's a bad one.

It has always sort of baffled me that the SE servers are okay with hosting a download for the test server (Which is also several gigs of files), but they can't be bothered to have some sort of direct download for the game itself. The key is what we're paying for anyway, it would be really nice to have some sort of direct download instead of having to resort to shady third party sites (IE torrents).
Until then, torrenting for the game files themselves or getting them from others in the community remains the only way to reinstall the game on a PC.

im pretty sure you can download the demo version, then register your character. it installs all the needed files (every expansion) and updates give you abyssea/add-ons.
I was under the impression the trial version only downloaded the core-FFXI game. No expansion outside of patches.

Yeah, you have to download the remaining files from steam most likely once you upgrade to full version, as you cannot enter any area that is not in the original FFXI pre-zilart~adoulin.
