it just occurred to me...
i think that rune fencers are not going to use standard greatswords as their default weapon like we initally believed....
geomancer is getting its own unique weapon class.... and im willing to put money on it that rune fencer will as well.

is anyone else considering this as a possiblity?

I doubt it. Too much work to add new animations.

Can I get some backing for this claim? As far as I know Geomancers will be using a subclass of Club skill weapons.

Rune Fencer is shown hitting a bunch of stuff with a Great Sword on the "Colonization System" page of the Seekers of Adoulin website as of right now. If that's actually just a thing that looks like a Great Sword, but can not use Resolution, that would be both sad and hilarious. It would be more sad than hilarious, closer to a dead kitten dressed as a clown rather than a clown dressed as a dead kitten.

I think he or she is just going way, way out on a limb about the Bells that Geomancer will equip.

Bells are strongly implied to have their own skill on the Seekers of Adoulin website, but Bells are also implied to be more like a Bard's instruments than a weapon: They'll be equipped like weapons and skill up like weapons or magic but just function as casting aids.

Things could go either way at this point, but it seems noteworthy that there isn't a single picture of a Geomancer physically attacking anything with a Bell or using anything that looks plain enough to be a simple Ranged Attack equivalent with a Bell. If Bells are used for anything other than casting aids, there aren't any pictures of those things posted yet.

The visible melee weapon on the Geomancer in all the Adoulin pictures is indeed a rather phallic club. Seriously, you will never un-see the Freudian imagery now that I've mentioned it.

Well, I can not find the post, probably due to it being in the Vanafest area, but I do recall shortly after RUN was announced that Camate came on the forums and confirmed the speculation that RUN's primary weapon of choice would be Great Sword. As I said though, I can not find the post, likely due to the Vanafest area being long gone. I am 90% sure it was Camate who said it though, and clearly remember the post, so any ideals of it being a new weapon type are very unlikely unless they changed some design decisions. If they did however, I fear there would be a large lack of choices of what weapons to use, since they would have to make weapon choices for all levels. That kind of thing would make them hard to level normally, and would probably put even more people into Abyssea for leeching it up.

Pretty positive you're right, because if you look at the Rockfin Naakual picture, the GEO is casting with a bell in hand, and the clubdong at its side.

Might be an offhand that just doesn't get used only held. Seems likely considering, like you say, the bell seems to be a casting aid rather than weapon.

I'm sure it's just going to be Greatswords.

You may be on to something, though. They released a slew of Hexaguns just for COR. They might add a line of "Runeblades" for flavor.

i hope that this is the case, even if hexaguns were a total joke.... things should have all had native multi shot.

omg... my EYES!

In all seriousness though, it does make sense that the bells are used in a similar fashion as the BRD instruments. I wonder however if this means the bells will turn out to be an inventory nightmare like the instraments can be - depending on whether you have the relic/empy for your BRD.

Edit: A Great Sword class just for Rune Fencer would be cool - especially if they had a very unique skin to define the class of weapon.

Based on the video, the bell only appears in their casting animations.

I don't want to have leveled PLD and capped my G.Sword merits for nothing...

According to what I have read and figured out from watching the videos is that the GEO Bells is going to be like BRD Instruments (Get ready for Inventory -X for those of you who want to play GEO) so carried in the Ranged slot. As for the RUN the weapon is the Great Sword but from the posts in the forums it looks like some players would like a new sub class for great swords (Example: Claymore and Great Sword are sub classes of the Great Sword) in the form of the a Rune Blade. As for your merits in Great Sword Horadrim you are good for RUN.

Yeah, I know. The idea of Rune Blade being like its own classification (like Great Katana) was my concern. Guess I misread the title when I thought about it.

Well the OP was about a new weapon type but that was shot down in the start of the post and changed to maybe being a sub class of Great Sword.

runeblade yeah sounds like a sub class, like the hexagun, or the curved blade

even tho it is not rune fencer related, the community team who did the stream said the bell goes into the range slot like bard instruments

You know i had to check to make sure this thread wasn't super old... Cause a lot of speculation going on here is already confirmed.

Bells are a Ranged/Ammo item, similar to instruments. They cast with them, but are not their primary weapon. This was shown many a time in the JP and NA videos :x.

However, as far as RuneBlade goes, It could simply become another class of greatsword. You know, we have ZWEIHANDERZ or whatever, Blades (Long boring ones), Algol-type, etc... "Runeblade" could be a RUN Specific Great Sword type. I can't imagine that'd be overwhelmingly difficult to program in...

to give more examples

Daggers:
Dagger
Knife
Jambiya
Harpe

Sword:
Scimitar
Blade
Sword
Degen/fleuret

Axe:
Tabar
Axe(Double)
Axe(Single)

Club:
Hammer
Club
Wand

so on, so forth... Basically, adding a new type/class of greatsword that fits the RUN job would be far more likely than a whole new weapon type.

It wouldn't, and that's like how its going to be.

That's kind of why no one's really posted here in a while -- unspoken agreement.

They need to add a level 1 GS in either case because I hope they do not expect us to use Rusty Greatsword as our main weapon for a few levels, thats a bit messed up.

Probably comes from the Staring quest and turns into the AF weapon.

I hope the AF has been properly adjusted for post Abyssea standards (AF weapon at 75, gear 80~90) so that our AF is our "Empyrean" gear -- or at least give it a +1 (Relic recolor) and +2 (Empy recolor) upgrade system.

All of the buzz seems to be on Geomancer right now, but I'm definitely going to get Rune Fencer this weekend.
