I recently upgraded to Windows 8 and have been trying to reinstall FFXI and playonline viewer.
I had POL installed and upgraded, but apparently it was the European version, so I couldn't install the game. I then removed it and installed the NA version. My problem is that POL config doesn't work now. When I change settings, they have no effect on the viewer. I uncheck the box for windowed mode and the viewer still opens windowed.
Any suggestions?

It could be that PoL dose not like Windows 8 but you can also try this. Open up the explorer window then go to (64bit version) C:\Program Files (x86)\PlayOnline\SquareEnix\PlayOnlineViewer\polcfg then double click on polcfg.exe
(32 bit version) C:\Program Files\PlayOnline\SquareEnix\PlayOnlineViewer\polcfg
I have not used Windows 8 yet but the install folders for PoL should be in the same place.

My problem is that POL config doesn't work now. When I change settings, they have no effect on the viewer.
Two options:
Uninstall the POL Viewer and install the NA version released with Windows 6.x compatibility: http://www.playonline.com/ff11us/download/media/vista01.html?pageID=media
If I remember correctly, you can get things to stick in the Config program if you start it by right-clickinng it and choosing "Run as Administrator." This should get you up and running long enough to get the first update downloaded (which would include Windows 6.x compatibility).

We are sorry to hear that you are having installation issues with FINAL FANTASY XI. Due to all the uninstall and reinstall attempts, we would like to suggest uninstalling all components of FINAL FANTASY XI, downloading and running a registry cleaner, and reinstalling FINAL FANTASY XI. If this does not resolve your issue, please replay back to this thread.
