View Full Version : I want to crossdress in FFXI.

Hello! I was wondering if FFXI will ever allow crossdressing as part of this fine MMO.
I play a male Taru. I would like to crossdress. There are many fine aspects that are demonstrated in female Taru clothing. I want to put on a dress, but maintain my masculinity as a BST. Do you (DEV TEAM) have any plans to implement crossdressing anytime soon?

You already do; all Tarutaru outfits are gender neutral, much to the chagrin to all the female Tarutarus that want to wear a skirt.

Yeah but think about the poor tarus that want to look on the outside how they feel like on the inside...
Besides, I'm sure there's more than just tarus who would be interested.

Still, he wants to be a cross-dressing Tarutaru but "maintain his masculinity as a BST." All he has to do is run around in AF/relic in his sytlish Ugg boots and problem solved!

Dancer's outfits are all different too, right?
Right!?
I would like to know (I do not know why), what these fine aspects are (if appropriate) that they are looking (°~°) for.

I know of this great plasticsurgeon that could take care of adding that femininity to your character's appearance while remaining a male taru ;)
I for one am happy being male.. and maintaining what little masculinity taru's get with their gear lol

But only if the background music for the event is Ding Dong Song.

Cross-dressing doesn't contribute anything to the game. If your main concern playing this game is your character's looks and/or gender then I think you're playing the wrong game...

Sure why not. Most Mithra are guys living out their CD fantasy through a computer game anyway. But I for one, demand a St. Andrew's Cross as a furniture item. It's not like we can have one in the house with the kids around.
It's a lot harder to use the mommy and daddy an are wrestling line when mommy is trushed up and gagged. Playing bank robbers works though.

While I respect your rights to request whatever you most desire from the game, I would sooner support a ban on all subligaria than a petition to wear a dress as a male. It is nothing against you personally. I'm certain your body is in peak-condition, and that you would appear quite handsome in a mini-skirt and tube-top. But I do not play this game to admire your shapely skin. That's what the rest of the internet is for.

This suggestion is complicated by no male model (NPCs dont count as they don't use regular equipment) for mithra and no female model for galka, so not everyone would be able to do it. Without equality in cross dressing (dammit) we shouldn't have it.

So back in the 75 cap days, a group of us used to static the Serket Ring KSNM pretty hard. One day our token lazy elvaan ran ahead, and was set up before us all at the shrine, or so we thought. See when we got to the elevator and called it down, we were greeted by the palest elvaan crotch in all the lands. Crossdressing liberates the male soul. Its a great endeavor to strive for ultimate beauty. Just as one strives to be the best competent player, maybe some of us just want to look pretty. I want to be a pretty slayer of wyrms. I want to walk down Jeuno in a lime colored dress, my hair tucked back, and wear the female version of DNC AF1 Feet. I could put on a great show. Also this thread is way more fun than topic #999,999 of job adjustments that suck, the good ones aren't listened to or thrown on to another job. Asking why only 3 or 4 things have been implemented from the road maps and then released and stayed broken. Why adjustments announced by SE 2-3 years ago are yet to be implemented. I feel like I should be chasing SE around a flat, giving her a slap across the face and screaming "WHERE'S MY UPDATED COP RINGS, SE! WHERE'S DINNER! WHERE'S MY NEW SUMMONS, SE! WHY DO YOU MAKE STORYLINE REWARDS SO BLEH FOR THE MOST PART!" and then sit down in front of a tv, watch a japanese game show where someone gets hit in the nuts or breaks a spine, and down a Kirin Ichiban.

About every other post on these forums "might be inappropriate and offend Members." That was done in a model viewer and if you look at it, it's obvious the opaline doesn't match up properly with the rest of the body. It would go beyond looking gay to just looking terrible.

- Condense RSE and Event Gear down to single items that are equippable by both genders but show up differently (tuxedo/dress in the same item, etc).
- Introduce a Config (Misc.) option to change the intended gender of your equipment to Male or Female.
- Introduce a Config (Misc.) option to show the gender changes in others (so people don't have to see Galkas in female Dancer AF if they don't want to). Default is off.
Of course, this is assuming it's not a big deal to augment the .DATs to make this work and not just look weird. Which it probably is. But hey, it's just an idea.

if you do it in model viewer, of course it looks terrible because you get boobs and stuff. they could implement new models for male bodies with female clothes on and vice-versa. i personally want to wear the female dancer JSE hats. i have a long-haired male hume; nobody can see my flower!! that said, SE will never do this. cross-dressing and homosexuality are strongly correlated for a lot of people and they don't allow gay marriage in-game. mayakov is the gayest ffxi will ever get, and his sexual orientation isn't even remotely confirmed since he shows no physical interest in any other characters. if someone had a homophobic problem with mayakov, SE could always claim he's "thraight". bottom line: SE wants everyone's money. gays, straights, homophobes, nazis, the taliban... whoever.

Cross-dressing doesn't contribute anything to the game. If your main concern playing this game is your character's looks and/or gender then I think you're playing the wrong game...
Actually, if you were to go back to the year 2000 and not implement a gender-relevant flag on equipment, it would be a little bit less coding that would have been needed to be done to create FFXI.
On the other hand that would mean either there would be no gender distinction to any equipment save that visually coded in, or you would need to take a little care in which version of an item you got to make sure you didn't cross-dress by accident.

Yes. THe answer to your indecision is yes.
In all seriousness, though, there's nothing that binds your character gender selection to a given gender (unless you play Mithra or Galka) so if you want to wear female-specific gear, play a female character, and if you want to wear male-specific gear, play a male character. It's very simple. It's not necessarily easy since you'll be starting over on a new character, but it IS simple.

This won't happen simply because the only "race" (each gender is treated as a unique race type by the game engine) which share the exact same body meshes are tarutaru, they would need to re-make the gender specific gear for the other types of characters.
Basically, won't happen due to their policies and the effort involved. Did I mention that this thread was a whooping waste of bandwidth yet ? :)

This thread brings up some questions... Will FFXIV be a bit more "modern" when it comes to sex, gender, sexual orientation and sex/gender identification?
I suppose it comes down to the limitations of character customisation, they can't cater to everyones role-playing needs, otherwise the entire games data allocation would be dedicated to character creation itself.
I suppose the easiest way to make people happy would be:
1. have gender neutral/short and long hair styles for both male and female characters (this is already true in most cases).
2. allow players to control bust/crotch size.
3. allow players to use voices from both genders.
This way, if you really wanted to 'cross-dress' you can just make a female character, set bust size to zero, and pick a male voice type (This doesn't work as well for say, Roegadyn, who vary quite greatly between sex). If they wanted to go even further they could allow players to specify whether they want to be referred to as "he" "she" or "s/he" (anyone remember Quina?).
I think these things should be considered now, since FFXIV:ARR is still in beta these changes can still be added. Plus I remember it being mentioned that FFXIV:ARR character creation would involve a way to increase character "sexiness" (probably bust size, although i've seen no evidence of this), so its already half way there.
But thumbs up for the OP, we are making leaps and bounds for equality in the real world, why not in our virtual worlds too?

Not that I don't support the Gay/Lesbian Community because I do, and I work in several establishments. I just finished DJing for Gay Pride New York City.
The thing is, this is a video game where different people from different cultures play this game. Not every culture or religion accepts sexual gender identity.
In my opinion, this would cause more problems than good. You'd have to deal with bullying by homophobia, religious arguments, parental issues to those not accepting their kids afraid of influence.
Not saying anyone is wrong for their way of thinking. But i'd imagine some people would in game harass those who did cross dress, be it that it's out of fun, or intentional out of hatred. We know players would abuse shout / yell and I'm sure having players fool around and call each other names would make things even worse if cross dressing was allowed.
Some people could take offense, some could walk into town taking sarcasm or joke the wrong way and have misunderstanding.
Take example Mathew Shepard who was tortured and murdered because of his gender due to hate crime. And even in the recent month 1 man was shot in the face in greenwhich village for being homosexual.
No matter how the world begins to accept Gay/Lesbians. There are still people out there who does not accept it.

Not that I don't support the Gay/Lesbian Community because I do, and I work in several establishments. I just finished DJing for Gay Pride New York City.
The thing is, this is a video game where different people from different cultures play this game. Not every culture or religion accepts sexual gender identity.
Not saying anyone is wrong for their way of thinking. But i'd imagine some people would in game harass those who did cross dress, be it that it's out of fun, or intentional out of hatred.
Take example Mathew Shepard who was tortured and murdered because of his gender due to hate crime. And even in the recent month 1 man was shot in the face in greenwhich village for being homosexual.
No matter how the world begins to accept Gay/Lesbians. There are still people out there who does not accept it.
Highlighted important point. I don't want to derail this thread, but there are wrong ways of thinking, and your examples above show what happens when people think so wrongly that they turn those wrong thoughts into wrong actions. These are examples of wrong ways of thinking because they resulted in harming and even killing another human.
Anyone who would tease/insult/harm someone else for their way of life lacks empathy.
This doesn't mean people can't think what they like, but as a global society we have to accept the fact that we are all unique and that everyone deserves to live their life however they desire. Most well balanced, intelligent people understand this.
I think at the end of the day it is up to Square Enix and how they want to run their business. I would be very dissapointed though if they didn't have a Equality, Diversity and Integration (and public relations) unit in the company that would point these things out to them, especially when developing FFXIV:ARR which may very well be around for the next 11 years as FFXI has. By which point if they haven't at least expanded to include same sex marriages they will look very old fashioned.
There is no reason in my mind why they can't at least add make up options to male characters, and cross gender hairstyles. It's not like it would take a terribly long time to implement.

Seriously there is many things that need fixing in the game than adding some stupid hair styles so males can pretend to be girls.

Well things start off innocent, escalates to teasing, mocking, trolling, humiliation, anger, hatred, disrespect, disapproval, bullying, tormenting, profanity, harassment, sexual harassment, pedophile, As innocent as this may look to you. I've seen way too bads than good and you do know that several news reported lately the seriousness of online bullying. It might be accepted in some parts of the US, but not in every single country of the world. And we know this game has many people from different cultures.
I just think its a bad idea in my opinion.
