Not sure if this has ever been explained. I've done tons of quests for Bastok, and other areas, like Rabao, and the Tenshodo.... Does anyone know why Gigas inhabit the tunnels down here? It kinda baffles me.

Don't ask me how, but I bet it has something to do with them being sailors.

Getting lost, finding Zepwell, and then just breeding in the tunnels... seems legit :P

This cave is located deep beneath the sea floor and was used by the Galka to flee to the Quon Continent. The Galka were driven from their homeland by beastmen known as the Antica. The interior of the cave is quite beautiful and is formed from a terrestrial coral. To the Galka, however, it is known as a place of tragedy and death, where the coral thrived on the blood of fallen comrades.

EDIT: Sorry, that doesn't answer your main about the gigas being there.

all well and good but doesn't really explain the Gigas. :p

It really does seem kind of random because they aren't seen in the desert nor are they seen anywhere in the Gustaberg region.

If I had to take a guess, I'd say the gigas there are remnants of the forces that attacked Bastok during the crystal war. The ones that survived the attack settled there from then onward.

It's really anyone's guess at this point unless there is some official explanation we have not heard of.

I'd guess it has something to do with the Crystal War, maybe the Shadow Lord sent Gigas over to get the Antican to join?

Another strength lies in the sheer number of Antica soldiers. In addition to their active legions, an enormous surplus of soldiers lies in stasis within the Antica's stronghold. When revived, the size of their army can increase a hundredfold. However, due to their lack of naval technology, only a few of their troops were able to participate in the Great War campaigns carried out on Quon; their presence had little effect on the outcome of the battles. It is widely believed that had the full Antican army participated in the battles on Quon, the allied forces surely would have been defeated.

That actually fits, Gigas were sent to clear Korroloka so the Anticans could push through and actually participate in the war, though obviously that plan failed.

Except the Bastok [S] quest line establishes the Antica as neutrals. The "lack of naval power" line may just be a common assumption, of the "all Beastmen are alike" sort.

WotG storylines are so packed full with retcon and plotholes that I'm not even sure up to which point we have to rely on them...
I mean, on one hand it's pretty clear they are "official" and in continuity, but on the other hand I'm kinda leaning to think that who wrote and thought the lore of races and world areas in the beginning didn't definitely see many things as they were showed to us in the silly WotG missions.

Well, I can easily work around that (though I don't recall any quests stating they were neutral out of anything other than necessity). The Shadow Lord sent Gigas over to disturb their nests and lead them through Korroloka where they would come out from under Bastok and completely remove the city from the war. Even if they were neutral and simply repelling the Gigas in that scenario, the moment they enter Bastok they'd almost certainly be attacked and even if the Antican didn't launch an offensive after that, Bastok would have to redirect its forces to defend quite a ridiculous hole in their defense, weakening their war effort (and it was troops from Bastok which eventually beat the Shadow Lord, so...).

Of course, maybe the Gigas are just their to harvest those suggestively shaped pieces of coral.

For the record, I'm referring to a cutscene in the Eldieme Necropolis [S] for the quest "Burden of Suspicion."

Thank you all for the replies! :P But hands down, Proth's reply explains everything!

Yeah, I'm really hoping a rep can shed some light on this...

for some reason I get the feeling the WoTG storyline is an alternate timeline, somehow I don't think I'm the only one in that

WotG spoilers!

At any rate, I'm sticking with my "mariners" angle. It's well-known that they're sea-faring; what we're seeing are shipwrecked sailors who found their way into the tunnels one way or another, much like all the other sea life we see down there.

It's the GBH's we should be wondering about. :P
