View Full Version : Would you play next year if they announced all servers shutdown 12/31/13?
This is not an announcement. This is only a hypothetical scenario.
Change of plans. SoA is not a new expansion - it's a drawn-out end-of-days world event. All servers will be shut down at the end of next year. SE will not release the server source code or license it to another provider... the game is just gone.
Would you play next year? For how long? Would you try to complete certain content? Would you even start on a relic or mythic (if you haven't already) knowing it has no use come New Year's Day?
The underlying question is - would you try to get in as much FFXI as you could, or would you 'cut your loses', so to speak, and move on? I'm interested to hear other people's position on this, as I sometimes think I keep playing this game simply because I know one day I won't be able to and I'll miss it. Thoughts?

I think most people here would stick it out to the end.

It's not about what is correct, it's about what makes sense. This does not make any kind of sense, and whoever thought of it should be shot right after the guy who thought up daylight savings time.

Daylight savings actually had a practical application back in the day. Not so much anymore, though.

in other places it yyyy/mm/dd or yyyy/dd/mm
it all depends ware you are
here is info http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Date_format_by_country

Even the US is starting to become less insane, many organisations and institutions are adopting to a profile conforming to the ISO 8601 specification, which describes the order in big endian format (years first, followed by months, followed by days).
So... did anyone read past the date or should I just give up on the actual question?

I would play right till the servers were shut down myself, I think as posted in a previous reply most of us would

I would say a few are starting to do this, these being international companies that originated outside the states. Majority still follow the dd/mm/yyyy standard.

I'm sure there would be a massive uproar and people would suggest increasing subscription fees if necessary. If SE appeared to be holding steadfast on their position, then I would probably start up another MMO account and have them simultaneously while observing what happened within FFXI. I would consider FFXIV and WoW, possibly something like Age of Empires Online.

It depends. If I had a few goals or milestones I felt that I would be able to complete, I'd try getting that done, and then probably quit when I was done.

Do you mean mm/dd/yyyy? If not, that's what I said (either dd/mm/yyyy or yyyy/mm/dd is fine). But if you do, first of all, that's not a standard, it's a custom. yyyy/mm/dd is a standard (ISO 8601, as mentioned before).
Second, of course it's only starting, because there was no official standardization until the 60s, and this particular standard not since the late 80s. And customs die hard, it's also why the US still uses imperial units and AM/PM to denote times within a day. However, since then it has increased significantly in use. The military uses it exclusively, and has so since the 40s. All government institutions and most academic institutions as well as most official bodies use either the little or big endian format, almost all businesses with an internet presence or other form of international access use it as well. And while that's only a start it's quite a significant one.
If you did mean dd/mm/yyyy, then no argument from me. Although, like I said, the military uses yyyy/mm/dd exclusively, and many companies are adopting that system for compliance with international standards, because pretty much every company wants an international presence these days.
I use dd/month/yyyy myself. today is 19/Dec/2012 and it makes it so people using any format don't get confused.

I'd play til they shutdown.... At least SE would give us advanced notice and a couple months free time in FFXIV:ARR as compensation, unlike NCSoft.....

It depends, if the "end of days" was as good as the last couple weeks we had of xiv before dalamud popped I prob would. Fighting to stave off the monsters that were invading the cities and the garlean and voidsent was a thrill, esp knowing the end was near. Not to mention the atmosphere SE created
If it was just another time sync that the rest of ffxi has become Id just cancel and full time ARR after its rerelease

South Park: The Stick of Truth
The only MMO of 2013. I'm sure I'll see a lot of you there! If not that, maybe some people will play ARR until they realize how bad the re-envisionment of a terrible MMO is, and then we have to wait til 2015 for 3.0 ARRA "A Realm Reborn Again"?
I'm sure FFXI will still be up and running long after we hit FFXIV:6.0 - Revenge of the Metacritic

Wow and ppl say I can be a negative nancy.
If you really believe that ffxi in its current state is going to outlast ARR you are completely delusional. The only way ffxi is going to survive another 10 years is if it gets a reimagining of its own. The ffxi of today will not last long if things remain as they are

The Stick of Truth is gonna be an MMORPG? First time I'm hearing about that. And here I was looking forward to it, what a shame.

XI has been a lot worse than XIV for a long time, anyone denying that hasn't played XIV in years. It will still outlast XIV, simply due to the fact that relaunching a game does not work, I have no idea what the hell SE are thinking, but obviously not much. People have a negative opinion of XIV that nothing will ever wash away. That's just how people work. I mean, just look at the comments here, people have already completely made up their minds about the game, and so will everyone else. They should have canceled it and either left it at that or released an entirely new MMORPG, if they really felt they needed to have two running (which is a completely ridiculous idea in the first place).

It's not relevant to anyone, ever, and has never been. If they wanna get up one hour earlier or later, why the hell do they need a clock to tell them that? They can just get up one hour earlier or later. It's not like the clock adjusts correctly with the daylight time anyway, DST is completely arbitrary. One hour means nothing, some idiot just came up with that number because it sounded nice (there is, by the way, also half-hour DST in other regions, which fucks up international synchronization even more).
DST has always been a horrible idea, a much simpler and better solution would have just been to adjust work times where/when needed (if at all).
