View Full Version : Fishing Issue (Can't Fish)

Having read about fishing fatigue, I decided to power level a character up to 20 so they could fish more than 10/day. 12 hours later, I had gained my 20th level and was finally looking forward to doing some serious fishing. The first line I dropped (in Bastok Markets) broke my rod (Willow). Over the next 30 casts, I caught no fish and broke 3 more willow rods with messages saying what I caught was too heavy...So I decided to get a rod for bigger fish (clothespole) and when I cast a line out with it, it caught something but said I couldn't pull it in because it was "too small" for the rod. So I thought it may have just been the day, time, or both (note: my character has zero fatigue and can re-cast almost immediately). My streak is presently 30 consecutive casts with no bites. Granted, the character's fishing skill is 0, but keep in mind the following: I fished with this character when they had the 10 fish/day fatigue cap and caught mostly moat carp (9 moat carp & 1 tricolored carp) at the same location (beside the goldsmithing guild in Bastok Markets) where I have now casts 50 times equalling 4 broken rods and not a single fish...I asked other players within the zone to try and fish in the area in order to see if it was the zone or my character, but unfortunately they were either not interested in helping me or did not speak English. *sigh* Any ideas on what the problem is? I have tried changing zones and logging out and back in to no avail...

Did you try using a hume or halcyon rod? Willow rods are about as durable as...well, willow, and Clothepoles are used for catching heavy fish like during a boat voyage.

It eventually let me fish (after breaking a couple of yew rods and one bamboo rod); however, it went back to as I described above after I caught about 7 carp...I don't understand this as I thought once you hit 20, fishing fatigue didn't kick in where you could no longer hook fish until around your 200th catch. I waited 24 hours between the time I was below 20 (& could catch only 10/day) to when I was at 20, so the time reset for fatigue (midnight Japan). I got the character up to 21 earlier to see if you actually have to be above 20 and will check back tomorrow after the maintainance. If I still can only catch 10, I suppose I will attempt to contact someone on the matter...

You're not making it easy to help you if you're just going to ignore the advice given/question asked. If you're going to use nothing but snap-happy rods like yew, bamboo and willow rods it's going to be difficult to really help you. Nobody uses those rods because they're crap for almost every type of fish. Snapping your rod because you hooked something heavy and not catching stuff because of fatigue are two very different things.

i usually use a hyclone rod to fish with. But almsot every time iv tried to fish over the years, ill catch one or two fish at best, then get 20 'you didnt catch anything' in a row. No matter the location.... so i dont fish

Teegrins, Kathlana!
Is the character perhaps less than 2 weeks old?
Aside from the level 20, this is another thing that will activate the restrictive restriction.
As a side note, Halcyon Rod (http://ffxi.gamerescape.com/wiki/Halcyon_Rod) (or Hume Fishing Rod (http://ffxi.gamerescape.com/wiki/Hume_Fishing_Rod) as suggested) + Little Worm (http://ffxi.gamerescape.com/wiki/Little_Worm) = indeed awesome for cheap local fishing. ^^
I hope this helps~
Good luck!

My problem was not with which rod to use, but rather, why I was receiving "you didn't catch anything" messages in a spot which landed me 10 fish (when I was within that limitation) within 15 minutes 24 hours previously.

The character is less than two weeks old as I have read that is one of the restrictions placed upon a character as far as fishing fatigue; however, from what I understood it was one OR the other, with the other being a character less than level 20. Is the level restriction irrelevant to fishing fatigue?? Is it solely whether or not your character is less than two weeks old?? Do you have to have both??

Kathlana,
If the character logged in for the first time less than 2 weeks ago, or/and is below level 20, the restriction is imposed. I.e., only one of them being true is enough.
As far as I know, this means that the level is relevant even after the two weeks. If a character has a level 1-19 job set as their main one at any point, fishing is rather fruitless. After the two weeks however, provided at least a level 20 job is being used, you should be able to get to the higher limit. ^^

I see...Well, I suppose I have no choice other to wait the two weeks and see what happens. :( Thanks for the replies. :)

Does eating food before fishing give you any benefit?

No. Unlike other crafts that benefit from macarons/rusks, the only thing that benefits fishing is enchantments from rings, such as pelican ring
