So, for your amusement lets put this up here. What new horrors, trials, tribulations and unreasonably unreasonable obstacles do you believe Square will have in store for us when/if Salvage II ever gets released?
To start things off:
A new version of Pandemic Warden to fight, impossible to beat by any means. And if you do he parts with a speech reveling that its the weakest of the strongest four, controlled by something far more sinister in the background, which is in turn subservient to a dark queen, which in turn answers to a dark lord, which in turn answers to a dark god.
After beating all that, you get a side grade to normal salvage gear, 0.0000000000000001% of the time (rounded up).

it will be a super boss that takes 60hrs to kill !
but do not fear you'll be able to save ur progress between each 10 min run. ps 1 run per jp midnight!

On a more serious note: I don't think the format will likely change much from normal Salvage. In all likelihood you need to gather keys from Savage in order to get to tier 2 Salvage. In there it'll have monsters much tougher than Salvage with numerous waves.

You enter with everything locked and there are no immediate weapons cells / unlocks so it becomes MNK Fantasy all over again.
The gear drops from NMs with stupid pop conditions, needing to spin around in circles while typing in say a specific line of text, that line will of course be in Japanese font and they wont' change it for six months.
The drop rate for the items required to upgrade current salvage pieces will make Pil envious.
The sets will just be slightly upgrades over current salvage sets.

... SE have already said you will enter with 10 or so unlocks. I mean, seriously. Do some reading.

They haven't said which ones. I'm fully expecting SE to totally screw it up at first.
You have
Seven primary states
Two for HP / MP
One for Subjob
One for Ability
Eight for equipment
So 19 possible choices. Now do we know if it's ten same random for everyone, or ten total randomly distributed? Will you get the healer with main/sub unlocked with the melee having magic unlocked?
I'm being honest, SE has a sh!t track record for getting things right on the first attempt. Lately we have Legion, NNI and lets not forget Meebles with it's random "kick someone out for no apparent reason that the developers can't figure out". So yes I'm totally expected SE to screw up and screw up big. We'll gnash out teeth and wail about the problems, and a few months later they'll fix it and make the event actually enjoyable.

Personally I have a bit of faith. I think the new director knows what's up and that's why they're taking their time announcing salvage stuff. It was once the best gear available and I think it will probably mirror nni gear in its usefulness. They won't screw up the Armor part. I'm thinking same concept as before with higher level mobs.

Looking at the Test Server, I think it will be something like: "Spend 15 minutes farming away your weaknesses and then 15 minutes killing NMs."
They've been adding monsters to the Salvage zones on the test server in anticipation of the update and at the moment I think the largest zone has had about 30 mobs added. Expect much shorter runs, I guess.

Expect much shorter runs, I guess.
Alternatively, each zone will have four modern-day equivalents of the Reactionary Rampart and this isn't apparent from the .dat files.
They will fill up the time with a physical manifestation of sadness shaped like a kitten dying in a pizza oven.
